depends on which codec you want to use. x264 for compressibility, xvid for compatibility, wmv for ms cock slobbery.

handbrake is decent enough for x264 and autogk for xvid

handbrake comes with the ffmpeg xvid encoder.

just want to add some home videos of the kid on youtube for some grandparents.... handbrake looks like its pretty awesome. encoding to mp4 now. Thanks for the suggestion. I know very little about video formats.
