How do you correctly say that something belongs both to you and someone else?

ex. My wife and I's car?

Does it just switch to you first? My and my wife's car...?

well would you say this is I's car?

That's something that I always learned.

So I guess you would say My wife and my's car.

But hell, I dunno. We need a grammar nazi in here.

^^^^, ^^^, ^^

not good enough. "Our" could refer to you and any unspecified person/people.

^
I would say "my wife and I's car" before "my wife and my's"

the reason you can't do what you're trying to do is because its retarded, and you can always contextualize 'our' slash you wouldn't begin your novel with "This is our car" and not follow that with an explanation of who you're talking about.

the correct way is "my wife's and my car"

to determine it you use each part independently...

you wouldn't say "my wife car" nor would you say "i's car"

the proper usage of "and I/me" is one of those things that bug the shit out of me because most people use "I" incorrectly because they think it sounds proper....when it really sounds retarded if you take the other subject out of the sentence....

You can't make fun of me for something I've already made fun of myself for!

In you're face!

Yes but my issue with that is that it sounds like you're talking about 2 cars (even though "car" IS singular). "my wife and my cars" doesn't sound correct (in talking about your wife's car and your own car together)

"QUESTION
Which of these is correct:

1. There is a problem with my and my wife's car.
2. There is a problem with my wife's and my car.

Are there any other ways for this sentence to be improved without using "our car." I know that in many cases it is of better form and more polite to not have the first person pronoun appear first in the sentence, but is it flat out wrong in any case?
SOURCE OF QUESTION & DATE OF RESPONSE
Houston, Texas Wed, Oct 24, 2001
GRAMMAR'S RESPONSE
If there is a mix of possessive forms—as, in this case, a common noun (wife's) and a personal pronoun possessive ("my")—it's always better to put the personal pronoun after the other one. So your second version would be an improvement. Your instincts about using "our" are right, though. If we can somehow refer to "me and my wife" in a prior construction so that we know what "our" refers to, we'd be much better off with that possessive form: "My wife and I took a taxi to work this morning; there is a problem with our car." The combination of possessive forms will almost always sound a bit clumsy. "

"My wife's car and my car"

"Our cars"

Like my grammy used to always say, "It's polite to mention others before yourself, so you use "________ and I," if you bother to use "I"."
