I doubt there will be a rant. Most everyone got this similar discussion out of their systems here

CCCP has never given me any issues. VLC and SMPlayer have been acting weird lately though, I'm going through the list, forgot about ZoomPlayer, but I'm on KMPlayer right now.

mvk is a shit container if you're encoding with it or doing anything other than viewing it. considering almost 99% of pirated stuff is in .mkv it's hard not to use it. of course none of you pirate media.

i use media player classic with cccp. i know codec packs are shit, but it hasn't caused me any problems nor has it messed anything up to my knowledge.

I need to figure out how to transcode and stream mkv to my 360. I think I have too many codecs installed.

Demux from mkv, remux into mp4? Transcode ac-3 to aac-lc if needed. As long as your h.264 stream isn't any higher than level 4.1 and the encode didn't use too many ref frames. I'm not an xbox owner though, so I couldn't say what kind of playback errors you might experience.

Ah is that why when I load some .mkv files I end up with about 8 tray icons popping up all of the sudden...

i have NEVER had this happen, and i use the (supposedly shitty) codec pack k-lite...i would assume that it's the content you're watching, not the codecs/pack

^^^

just ffdshow icon for me, but through the course of troubleshooting this transcoding issue, I've installed a number of random codecs as well as CCCP and might have clicked through TVersity's codec pack during install.

if you're looking for a simple transcoder for mkv so you can play on your xbox

Vuze will do what you want. I know people hate all the bloat, but the transcoding capability is rather cool.

this guide worked if anyone is trying to transcode mkv to 360
