more record companies are starting to realize the potential benefit of offering free downloads of certain singles, but the vast majority are still stuck in the dark ages.

You didn't say shit about record companies in your OP, where you made the stupid assertion that the two terms are mutually exclusive, followed by a second stupid assertion that all music is distributed by record companies.

How do the terms unlicensed, free and legal go into your brain, then come out with "oh I should totally talk about commercial music distributed by record companies, then follow up by saying I was totally ignoring the original intent of the thread by saying I was purposefully not talking about independent artists"

the guy is looking for unlicensed music, which often means unsigned / independent bands.

http://reverbnation.com is a good (free to stream / sometimes free to download) resource for independent artists of all sorts.

because that's how the vast majority of digital music is distributed. even a shit ton of independent artists use services like tunecore to make a few bucks off of their album sales.
