Wow, I just heard this on my local sports talk show in CA. He was 22 and just pitched 6 scoreless last night. He has been one of the Angels top prospects for a few years now and many thought he had ace potential.

Apparently hit by a drunk driver in Fullerton, CA.

And apparently some fan was killed in a fight at an Angels game too this week.

RIP

[Edited on April 9, 2009 at 11:34 AM. Reason : he was 22... I thought he was born in 84 not 86]

"LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart was among three people killed in a crash in Fullerton, California, early Thursday, according to media reports.

CNN affiliates KTLA and the Los Angeles Times as well as TMZ.com identified the victim as Adenhart, 22, from Silver Spring, Maryland.

One person was arrested in connection with the three-vehicle accident occurred about 12:23 a.m. Thursday in Fullerton, south of Los Angeles. Witnesses say a red minivan ran a red light and struck two vehicles at a Fullerton intersection, police Lt. Craig Brower told CNN.

One of the vehicles, a gray Mitsubishi, slammed into a power pole, Brower said. Two of its passengers were dead at the scene, he said. The other two were transported to a hospital, where a third later died. The remaining passenger was in critical condition, Brower said.

A passenger in the minivan was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, Brower said. The third vehicle sustained minor damage, and its driver was unhurt, he said. Police did not identify any of the dead.

The minivan's driver fled the scene and was later arrested, Brower said. Andrew Thomas Gallo, 22, of Riverside will face charges of manslaughter, felony driving under the influence and hit-and-run, he said.

Footage from the scene showed the minivan with a smashed front end and the Mitsubishi, which was heavily damaged. Debris littered the intersection where the crash took place, and it was cordoned off with yellow police tape.

they just said he was going to UNC until he needed Tommy John surgery at age 17.

Then he went straight to the Angles out of highschool....

As an A's fan, this is good for my team - he tore us up last night as a rook, but this really puts life and sports into a broader perspective...

Baseball teams are like families you can bet this stings badly in that clubhouse.

Why does it seem like its always a baseball player this shit happens to?

This is terrible. As someone who could only dream of playing in the Bigs as kid, I can't help but feel absolutely terrible for this kid who just made it and had so much promise but never got to fully enjoy it.

Aye. And anything less than the death penalty for the driver is an insult to the idea of justice.

he was a 14th round pick, so he probably didn't have much of a signing bonus. i'm not sure what kinda deal his contract was for, but since he was a rookie he was probably making league minimum, which i guess would have only gotten him a paycheck or two. minor leaguers only make like $1000-2000/mo, but they have very few expenses usually

SC said his signing bonus was second round level.

I don't know if anyone has driven/ridden in an Eclipse - that's a tiny ass car for four adults to be in...

I couldnt believe it when they actually reported that 4 people were riding in that thing. Not trying to make jokes about this tragedy but that is the last car i would want to be in with 3 other adults.

(well even tho there is more room, i would much rather be in that one than a light blue convertible bug.)

Adenhart probably hasn't even gotten his first ML paycheck yet. It's not like he is on some huge ML deal. He did get a really nice signing bonus 4.5 years ago but he was probably making 50k a year in the minors...

I'll venture that the two people in the front were sitting wayyyy far up to make room for the people in the back, who still had no room.

Why is that the drunks always come away6 from this unharmed?

Hey, let's ask Ragged!!!
