Slow, unathletic, short white guys will be sure to excel in Rich Rodriguez's offense.

Kinda looks like a character in an Adam Sandler movie. Kinda like a cross between Little Nicky and the Water Boy.

Oh, and since I don't keep up with college basketball all that much... did they kick him off the basketball team for sucking or something. I thought I saw the guy riding the pine during one of those tournament games.

^I'm pretty sure Coach K told Paulus that he couldn't play football at Duke while playing basketball. I could be wrong though.

Is he going to be able to play basketball for Duke when he is playing football for Michigan? I.e. he'd be losing out on basketball either way... unless Michigan is letting him on the bb team as well.

^^Probably because he wanted to be on a decent team.

So will he have 4 years of eligibility? I thought there was some stupid rule that the second you step onto a college campus your eligibility in all sports begins. It's really asinine to think about it. What if you are a genius that can enroll in college when you are 15 and can ball your ass off on a basketball court, but b/c you haven't matured enough physically coaches can't really run the risk of having you play football until you turn 18. Say that despite being a great athlete you have no desire to play professionally and want to become a brain surgeon, but couldn't otherwise pay for it since you are poor. The kid could play ball for 4 years, graduate with his BS in 3, get accepted by the school's medical school, and to help pay for the remaining 3 years of medical school he could play football. If the NCAA really cared about the student in student-athlete they'd let this occur.

Here's the math behind the question:
Quote :
"Wait, if he is good enough to suit up for Michigan... why didn't he play football at Duke?"

+

Quote :
"I'm pretty sure Coach K told Paulus that he couldn't play football at Duke while playing basketball."

That doesn't make much sense because Paulus wouldn't be playing basketball at Duke in either scenario... so it would be unlikely that this would be a deciding factor for a move to Michigan.

=

[touch of sarcasm]Is he going to be able to play basketball for Duke when he is playing football for Michigan? [/touch of sarcasm]

His eligibility for basketball is over... he has played for 4 years and cannot play another. The move to michigan has absolutely nothing to do with basketball (except maybe the fact that he will not be playing pro ball what so ever, and this is a last ditch effort to be a pro athlete)

Im confused where the 1 year eligibility comes from though...why that number? Seems like it should either be 4 (because he hasnt played football in college) or 0 (since hes played 4 years of college sports). And I realize Michigan was awful last year, but is their QB situation bad enough theyd try a guy who hasnt played the position in 4 years?

I think it is tied to the 5 to play 4 rule. I was not aware the clock applied to all subsequent sports.

He has an assumed red-shirt year in football. It is the same reason why Russell Wilson was a redshirt freshman in football this year while a true sophomore in baseball.

For the lazy fucks that won't read the article:

Quote :
"Even after playing four years of basketball in Durham, Paulus would have one year of eligibility left if he chose to play football.

According to NCAA rules, the former star high school quarterback wouldn't have to sit out a year because he would be playing a different sport than basketball."

i can't believe i'm actually defending a dookie, but i don't think he's as slow and unathletic as some of you think. maybe his lateral quickness isn't that great, but i'd guess he's got good enough end to end speed to make him a running threat from the backfield. i think he also threw like 150 TD's in high school, so he probably has a decent arm. his class was admittedly weak, but scrubs aren't typically ranked #1 at their position

UPDATE http://www.wralsportsfan.com/duke/story/4958032/

it's my duty to update it since i started this thread.

wolpackhoops cred >>> wral cred

Quote :
"Paulus transfer to Michigan unlikely, was offered tryout with Duke

Who would have thought Greg Paulus would be the Duke basketball player making all the headlines? Maybe it's because he's not looking at basketball at the moment.

Duke confirmed that Paulus worked out for the Packers last week in Durham when he flipped some passes to Eron Riley. On Tuesday, Paulus was in Ann Arbor to watch Michigan's final spring practice and talk to head coach Rich Rodriguez about playing football there in 2009.

On Wednesday Duke coach David Cutcliffe said in his spring football teleconference that he invited Paulus to try out for wide receiver with the Blue Devils.

Cutcliffe was unwilling to offer Paulus a chance at the starting quarterback position for the Blue Devils after being away from the position for so long.

"I think that was the deciding factor," Cutcliffe said on Wednesday. "I was going to try and get him out, give him a chance at slot receiver. He's a fierce competitor, a great young man."

Duke spokesman Art Chase said that as of Wednesday, Paulus is not going to explore any opportunities with Duke football and he is moving on.

Jon Heuser is following this story from Michigan's side for the Ann Arbor News and he joined The Sports Lunch on Wednesday. Heuser sees Paulus ending up at Michigan a long shot.

"From Rich Rodriguez' standpoint it's a no lose situation, I'm not so sure from Greg Paulus' standpoint ," Heuser told 99.9FM The Fan ESPN Radio. "If he really wants to play I would imagine there would be some other schools at a lower level where he could go and get the reps he needs to show himself and set himself up for an NFL career, I don't know that he would get that here."

Currently Michigan's quarterback situation for 2009 is unclear. Two freshmen in Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson were likely to battle with Nick Sheridan for the starting position this summer.

The Wolverines lost their starting quarterback from last year when redshirt freshmen Stephen Threet decided to transfer from the program in February. Threet threw for just over one thousand passing yards with nine touchdown passes.

Sheridan is the only quarterback in the competition that can say he has more college experience than Paulus, but according to Rodriguez is going to miss at least two or three weeks with a leg injury. Sheridan threw two touchdowns and five interceptions last season.

"Michigan would look at him (Paulus) as a guy that could come in and give them more depth at the position and give them some over-experience as a high level athlete and give them a little back-up depth," said Heuser.

But the question is, would Paulus settle for being a back-up quarterback with one year of eligibility left?

FOXSports.com also reported that several NFL teams and other college programs have inquired about him, and that Paulus was thinking of continuing his basketball career until the Green Bay Packers contacted him a couple weeks ago.

Under NCAA rules, Paulus would not have to sit out a year if he transfers because he would be playing a different sport than basketball."

i don't like Paulus or anything, but it's interesting, because i think he was like the #1 QB the year he graduated and was also i think a top 5 PG...pretty cool athletically speaking. He kind of is the "White Deion Sanders" as Slave Famous noted.

Except Dion was actually a professional athlete.

A white Deon might be someone like John Elway who could have played major league baseball at the same time he played football and Danny Ainge who did play in the MLB before NBA and is the only person ever to be a 1st team All-American in baseball, football, and basketball while in HS (thank you Wikipedia).

as the above article suggests, I think its more likely that he ends up at a lower tier school than Michigan. From what I've seen and read, Tate Forcier seems to be the shoe-in at QB this year for Michigan. Unless Paulus is damn good, he'd probably be riding the pine at UM.

paulus could have played QB and PG at almost any school in the country, except Duke. He went to Duke, so he didn't play QB. I don't think he'll be very good but why not give him a shot, they did have him ranked very highly a few years ago.
