A buddy of mine asked my opinion on cars. He is looking to buy. His choices so far are a 3-series, WRX, C30, or a Tocoma. He would be buying pre-owned and looking to spend $25k or less. Give or take. All the pictures I have posted are 2006 models since he will be right around that year when he decides which direction to go. I posted the picture of the CTS because I drive an 06 3-series and I don't want him to get the same damn car. I also suggested an MKZ.

please move this to cc

You've got the wrong pic up there. The S60 is their mid-range luxury sedan, the C30 is their "entry level" super awesome looking butt hatch.

As far as which to pick, well... Has he driven every last one of those cars yet?

^^ Damn, he's 6'6"? I'm not sure that he'd fit in all those cars he listed.

Also, what's he using this car for? Picking up wimmens, hauling shit to the dump/from lowe's for his new house, just for daily driving, for red light ric0r racing?

you're right. my fault. Here is the actual C30.

Well I don't think there is a guy out there who buys a vehicle without wanted women to notice. So assume it will be for that. I doubt he will have much to tow/haul as he is an engineer and currently rents an apartment in Charlotte. He currently lives ~15 mins from work and this would be his primary vehicle.

dude, it's just a question for the fun of it. he is not actually going to purchase a vehicle based on the response from a poll on a website he doesn't look at.

That Volvo is an S60, not a C30. C30:

Why? I've ridden in both and driven 2 different S60s, and the S60 is not only more spacious (by quite a bit) but it has a much higher-quality feeling interior. An S60 feels like a luxury car, whereas an S40 feels like a nice small car. Unless I happened upon a bottom-of-the-line S40 or something. The S40 is kind of cramped spacewise. S60 also drives quite well--good handling, very nice ride, good pickup (I drove the 2.4 turbo version). Find one with the sport package and the seats are INSANELY comfortable (the standard ones are pretty good too). An S60 T5 would be a bit more sporting, and an S60R is a quality sports sedan, though I'm not sure if you could score an '06-'07 S60R for under 25k. All in all I like the S60 and think he should look at at least one. Never ridden in/driven the C30 but it's a cool design, but it's definitely a smallish 3-door and therefore kind of the odd man out on that list.

CTS is a good choice but I don't like the interior design on the 1st generation; the protruding center stack weirds me out and is kinda ugly. They fixed it on the new ones but they're out of your/his price range. MKZ is a nice car, nothing sporting about it though. It and, say, the WRX are pretty much polar opposites--WRX is all about the sporting and not much for luxury. Or if MKZ, look at the LS too--produced until '06. Yeah, older design, but they're pretty nice IMO. More sporting intentions than the MKZ, especially a V8 model.

3-series is a known quantity. Does many things well. They don't get that kind of reputation for nothing--but you know that since you own one (why would it bother you if a friend got one too, unless it was the same color/rims...)

Que? I've heard mixed reports on their larger models, but all signs point to good on the Tacomas.

Basically your boy there has many options and might want to decide what type of vehicle he wants first.

I'd just buy a mid-size sedan my tall ass fit in and be done with it.

The C30 would be a neat option, too. I kind of like hatchbacks though.

Seriously though, the toyota tacoma? Just no. That is not a cool car. I mean, at least when we've got a WRX, a 3-series, a C30, and maybe a CTS (if you can get him to buy one) on the list.

From those cars, I would get the BMW, then the Volvo C30/S60, and then WRX. The other 2 wouldn't even be on my list.

As for the S40 vs. S60 argument, yes, the S60 is bigger, luxurious, etc., but if you could get your hands on an S40 T5, that would be killer. All that power in a smaller caller (as compared with S60), would mean that it would perform better than the S60 2.5T and the S60 T5. A base model S40 is obviously not as powerful, but still not bad. I drove an 06 model a couple of weeks back, and it definitely had a slight kick to it that's not found in similar Jap cars.

The S60 R is another beast totally, and it is one of the best 300 hp sports sedans ever made, in my eyes. The interior is whoa, and those seats are simply phenomenal.

Oh BTW, for the OP:

C30 T5 is actually 227 hp, and is just $24k.

Obvious choice.
