They should put a cricket in the nose cone like we did when we were kids and used to fire model rockets.

I'm honestly not a rocket nerd or anything. I'm just surprised the FAA or Homeland Security would let a private citizen launch something so large.
4/19/2009 12:19:44 AM
Why? Private citizens fly airplanes that go higher than 4k feet. [Edited on April 19, 2009 at 12:23 AM. Reason : df]

Yes, but those can be controlled reasonably well, rockets are unguided.
4/19/2009 12:25:22 AM
yeah, there's no reason they shouldn't be allowed to. there are some rules they're subject to, but it's perfectly legal.

Yeah, I would expect something that large to go a bit higher. The V2 rocket wasn't terribly larger and it was capable of sub-orbital flight.
4/19/2009 12:28:39 AM
They have very specific rules on this. As long as they are followed, hell if they could figure out how to put something in orbit, go for it. Mostly call the local FAA office, and notify. I think some radar tracking has to be done as well for planes in local area.

I think the fact that it is only going 4-5k feet in the air is precisely why they are allowed to do this.

North Korea is gonna be PISSED

wonder if he bought the kit from korea?

^^^i think that some of those large-scale, high-powered model rockets can go a lot higher than that.[Edited on April 19, 2009 at 10:36 AM. Reason : ]
