If I get a package and know I will return it before opening it can I write "Return To Sender" in marker on it and give it back to the post office? I've done this before but just wanted to make sure. How do they even know if you opened it first (doesn't matter for me, but I'm curious)?

Well, if the guy comes to your door to deliver the package you can say "I need to refuse delivery of this package because the shipper screwed up my order, so the package needs to be returned to the sending company."

What if I can't get to him in time?

I believe you can just put "RTS" on the package and put it back in the mailbox
