I just installed firefox on my htpc and needed to install the adobe flash plug-in for YouTube. Discovered http://www.adobe.com does not work. It just gives me a network timeout. Can't even ping to the website.

Roommate mentioned it might be a DNS problem so i switched from static to automatic ip and it defaulted to the automatic 24.25.5.149/150 dns, which was what was set before but didn't fix anything.

I also unloaded trendmicro and checked the vista firewall settings but neither resulted in anything. I'm able to get to any other website but can't access adobe.com on either IE or FF only on that computer. Adobe works fine on any other computer on the network. Any ideas?

Not that it really solves your problem, but what happens when you go to http://192.150.18.60/ ?

Try pinging adobe's ip (what he posted above). You can also try 192.150.18.117

If you can ping the ip, and not the domain name, then it's a DNS issue. Try changing your dns servers to 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 (those are the opendns.com servers).

It's also possible that you have a virus. Some viruses block specific networks.

You aren't running peerguardian are you?

The most likely thing is a dns issue, though.

^^no didn't work either. so i guess that means it isn't a dns problem right?

Ok i feel stupid now. Fixed the problem. Someone had accidentally set the static subnet mask to 255.0.0.0 instead of 255.255.255.0 and this didn't allow me to get to http://www.adobe.com, but only http://www.adobe.com (from the websites i checked).

Why would that subnet work for every website but http://www.adobe.com?

^yeah first thing i did was ping both the website and ip to rule out dns. i don't know why an incorrect subnet mask would cause one website not to work.

Because it thought that 192.x.x.x was in your local network, and your ip is probably 192.168.x.x Any website that started with 192 would not work.

^oh so by random chance adobe.com was the only website i tried with a 192 ip address? i'm still confused on how the subnet mask works.

so with that subnet, it was looking for adobe's address (192 address) on the network but it obviously wasn't there?

- i guess i would have to understand how subnet addresses work to understand how 255.0.0.0 is different than 255.255.255.0.

If your ip is 192.168.0.123....

255.255.255.0 treats 192.168.0.x as your local network
255.255.0.0 treats 192.168.x.x as your local network
255.0.0.0 treats 192.x.x.x as your local network

Make sense?

You can get a more thorough explanation at wikipedia. It's not quite as simple as I make it out to be.
