watched some Master and Commander yesterday and am working my way through some wikipedia through some naval history

^^ Third rates are kick ass ships. It's the second rates that kind of blow.


Which is why we refer to things that aren't that good as "second rate"

^^a youtube comment said that the HMS Surprise was actually based on HMS ____ which was actually a sloop, not a frigate

I looked up a "sloop" on wikipedia and was surprised those kinds of ships were used as gunships (20-30 guns?). I just associated that type of ship with fishermen
