Have you ever played anything written/designed by Tim Shafer?

Maniac Mansion
The Secret of Monkey Island
Day of the Tentacle
Full Throttle
Grim Fandango
Psychonauts

Everything this man touches is fucking awesome. And combine that with the hilarity of Jack Black and the badassery of Heavy Metal legends.....

Now whether it will sell well will remain to be seen.

i liked many of the adventure games plenty. asside from psychonauts though all of those games are over a decade old. game expectations and ability have changed a lot.

so again, i respect the idea, but remain semi skeptical. i havent seen anything that would lead me to believe the gameplay will be great, which is what is really important.

OK, I did not realize that one person was largely responsible for Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle and now this. My interest in Brutal Legend has just now taken a huge jump.

I'm not certain there will be anything ground-breaking game play wise. Looks like a 3-d action game coupled with giant boss battles. But the setting, writing, plot, comedy, voice work, etc look to be world-class and original.

I happen to think it will do well, considering how well all the guitar hero/rock band games do and tim shafer's basically cult status. But then, psychonauts was freaking awesome too and we saw how well that did.

You can download it on XBLA, btw.

Just doesn't look that interesting to me, but I tend to not get wrapped up in a game's plot/story. Skip the cut scenes, mutter a voodoo curse for developers that don't allow you to skip, and get on with the gameplay.

I've never found myself thinking:
What a great game. The gameplay wasn't so great but the story was amazing.

I have though:
What a great game. The story is the dumbest thing I've ever seen, but the game is incredibly fun to play.

I'm also thinking that the gameplay for guitar hero/rock band is the driving force in its popularity. I don't know that I'd attribute the driving factor of the success of those games to their rock 'n roll theme. Of course no one would want to play the game if it had a lousy song set, but they also wouldn't want to play the game if the gameplay sucked and the most compelling thing about the game was the song set. If that were the case people would just buy the soundtrack to the game and be done with it

Do you really skip past the story of every game you play? Do you just play fighters and first person shooters?

Yes, unless you absolutely have to do some epic reading in order to progress (Fallout 3 as an example). I've never liked fighters and FPSs got old for me about 5 years ago.

he's right though.

i have played games ands aid "wow, awesome game with a STUPID story."

ive never said "wow awesome game, but man that gameplay sucked. good thing for the story."

the greatest games are games with good gameplay AND an awesome story/style. at the time those adventure games were out, games really had to rely on the story cuz the gameplay was just point and click for most every game on the market. games like DOOM showed us that gameplay could trump story if need be though.

i'm saying it NEEDS both to succeed in any measureable way. i do not doubt the writing will be great, but it alone cannot make a game.

Tim MOTHERFUCKING Curry is on board for this game.

I officially don't care if the gameplay is a stinking turd. I'd watch whatever cut scenes are planned for this game like it was a movie.
