Should be worth a beta, could end up being more. You know that WoW is the WoW killer. As long as they have the base they will keep improving / updating the game. All you can hope for is a unique solid game to hold its own, which I think it very well could be.

I like WoW but I'm tired of the rock paper scissors PvP. It seemed as a Warlock I could take ANY class easy except Warriors and Rogues who I could NEVER beat. Against Hunters there was actually some variety where I would win sometimes and lose sometimes. This was at level 70 though. It was still pretty fun though, too bad I sold my account.

I also hope they make worlds so that you go back to them after the level cap.

I could have sworn there was a Star Wars themed MMORPG a few years back. I even remember people complaining/wondering what it took to become a Jedi. How is this game any different, or are you talking about the same one?

Like what ^^^ said, Star Wars Galaxies is the current failure of a Star Wars MMORPG. From what I've gathered, it started out great, and had a great system for economy, specialized careers, travel, space ship buildings and customization, the works. There was a very secret and encrypted system for Jedi, where some very few characters were/became Force Sensitive, and could possibly become Jedi. I seem to remember that they were even hunted down because of it by CPU Vader-like organizations.

However, people tried to figure out the formula for creating one of these Force Sensitives, and eventually everyone got their panties in a wad because they couldn't be a Jedi. Once the game developers allowed you to choose Jedi as a path, the class was significantly weakened, lost all novelty, and the game eventually dove into a cesspool as other factors of the game broke down and everyone went back to WoW.

Except for our smelly suitemate, who went on dates through Galaxies and literally 'rofled' into the corner of his room once, when he wasn't practicing his Native American dances or playing DDR.

pretty much, additionally on release there were no vehicles, none, nothing, no ships, no speeders, not even a bloody fucking wheelbarrow... nothing.

having the ability to either buy or build your own ship/s should have been a major part of the game (a goal) but without it you are basically wow with blasters killing rats... it was silly. the economy, careers and such were excellent but they should have released with ships as well (ones that you could eventually get at least)

shit i was gonna be a engineer in a manufacturing company in the game then i heard i had no vehicles at all and lost all interest.

I thought the death system was pretty interesting, where your body 100% died, and you were released as a clone and you had to return to your body to recover any belongings you had.

Maybe they changed it, but I thought it was pretty cool

That doesn't make much sense, SWG came out about a year and a half before WoW.

SWG was alright, but they made a major mistake setting it between the movies. People like Star Wars because of the Jedi, since they were suppose to be no/very few Jedi it kinda killed the games appeal for a lot of people. But it had a pretty hardcore following until the NGE (basically WoWifed the game).

When I was reading about the game, I thought the economy stuff was going to be awesome. Even without Jedi, it could've been a great game if they delivered everything correctly.

How is SWTOR going to be different?

player housing/structures in SWG was my favorite part

Sounds like people won't be able to quest together much b/c of the variety of quests. Also sounds like you'll be running around with quite a few npc's which should be fun.

Yeah, you may be talking out of your ass, but I think your ass is right. I think that is mostly because of were MMOs have their foundation. Most MUDs were fantasy oriented, and the first MMOs were basically derived from MUDs.

I think SWTOR will probably be the next big MMO though. WoW killer? Maybe, just because WoW is getting up in age. I have a lot of faith in Bioware, they are pretty similar to Blizzard in terms of quality control and not releasing a game until it's ready and they are satisfied with it.

I trust Bioware but I'm not sure how they'll do on an MMO... it's not like single-player RPGs (of which, they are far and away the best at making, without any remotely close competition) have the social community interaction and living economy of MMOs...

I'll probably only be playing this if some of my friends start up on it too... then again I'd say that about pretty much any MMO out there.


As for comparisons to WoW/WoW-killers...
WoW is killing itself (slowly, and in small amounts, but still... seems like they've saturated the market in terms of new users, and are currently bleeding out on bored higher-end players). High-end raiding is practically dead, and Blizz announced that they'd basically never go back to the old more-restrictive and more-difficult raiding systems of the old days. High-end arenas have lost a TON of balance since Wrath, to the point where quite a few "I really only play WoW for the arena"-type players I know have lost all interest.

I play WoW and would be highly interested in switching for a Star Wars MMO. I played the Galaxies beta and was not impressed, granted that was well before WoW.

I never played Galaxies, but from what I've read there wouldn't be an overwhelming amount of interaction between other players. It seems with the number of storylines, interaction with other players wouldn't further the story for your character. However, with bounty hunters and the sith, you may have to contend with these players from time to time. I just don't see a large number of Jedi affecting the individual gameplay of other Jedis.

Ytsejam. Oh I figured, but I didn't really do any research so I'm just covering myself. It also doesn't help that there are FAR more fantasy based ones (done by people who know what they are doing no less).

to be fair, how well was Blizzard really gonna do? Great RTS guys jumping into mmo territory? sure they had diablo, but diablo was fairly small, didnt really require interaction if you didnt want it, and was purely instanced. only a few of those skills transfer.

battlent was just a hub with chatrooms. nothing fancy but a smart move. you saw what i meant though.

and i was unaware of eq devs being hired by blizz, but that would be rather smart. it defintely felt more EQ than some of the other games i played.

That has more to do with the status of the Jedi class upon release than anything else. Jedi was, from the start of the game, an elusive and mysterious class. It took a long time for people to even begin understanding how to obtain force sensitivity. Once it was better understood, it was still an extremely challenging undertaking that would generally take a hardcore player around a year to complete. So, when they made the change to allow anyone to choose Jedi, some people were fairly pissed. Many of those people quit the game, and that (along with the rest of NGEs) probably led to the "death" of SWG.

I don't see any real problem with allowing Jedi to be a default class, especially in an entirely new game. While Jedi of the traditional Star Wars universe are very powerful, they'd obviously need to be balanced within the realm of SWTOR. I can think of many better things to do in Star Wars than play a Jedi, anyway.

^^The biggest problem with allowing Jedi as a default class was the fact that suddenly:

1) The community became more idiotic and childlike. Kind of like how the horde got a lot more fucking morons in it when Blood Elves came out.
2) Suddenly, everyone was Jedi. The lack of more business-oriented classes played a bit of havoc with the economy (along with the older players quitting), and besides that, "Oh look, everyone on this planet is a Jedi" isn't exactly a great Star Wars atmosphere.
3) Galaxies got a lot of its initial appeal from being not just a Star Wars MMO, but a SW game that focused on everyone else in the universe besides Jedi.


Allowing Jedi as default could work fine, but not really if they don't make some adjustments for the already-established system in the game. There'd still be some of the "most of the community is jedi" problems, but suddenly basically giving everyone access to what would at least appear to be the strongest class in the game brings in so many more balance issues along with sending a huge "fuck you" to all the older players who had been working towards the goal.

i would say this is part of the problem with a series that has such an established history.

EQ and the like were fresh so no issues.

WOW had a game world, but you could do a lot with it since the other games were in such a different format.

things such as warhammer also have an established history, but since it is a battle game where there are tons of classes to begin with (and the game is pvp oriented i hear), it works well.

star wars just begs to be difficult because the coolest things are generally going to be more rare.

just make um all "jedi in training" and have severly reduced power. maybe the equivalent of an epic quest can get them some of the bigger powers.

I kinda agree with this. Everyone being a Jedi was really, really stupid in the timeframe SWG was set in. The Emperor and Vader had killed almost, and those few remaining were in hiding, yet you have 50%+ of the population as Jedi. Yeah...

SWTOR is set in a time were Jedi were the most numerous along with having even more Sith than Jedi.

I can already see people complaining about under powered Jedi now though.

Yeah, personally I think this is best solved by either letting people class into the jedi rank after some certain degree of training or whatever...

Or, let people start as grossly underpowered jedi ("jedi in training" as mentioned earlier, "padawans" as would be canon, "force sensitives" would even work), and let the class get better with levels (in other words, just like everyone else does).

that was pretty badass. The thing about Star Wars games like this is that I never really have an interest of playing a Jedi, I'm much more interested in other classes/professions that make up the universe.

Looks like they are gonna base it off of the Great Sith War. Or the Great Hyperspace War. (if you dont know about these two, read some starwars books, or comics.) Anything else by then the Sith are following the rule of 2.

^ if you knew anything about Starwars, the darth vaderish guys are proper sith. They had all sorts of guys in Knights of the Old Republic. The Boba Fett chick is a mandalore. They all have that type of armor.
