So I just got a Mac and my music and crap was backed up on a My Book from WD using their backup utility. Now, I've installed the MyBook stuff on the mac, however the backup can't be found in the restore function. How can I get to all my music that is on the drive(yet broken up in the WD format)??

probably connect your MyBook back to a PC and pull the data off and transfer it to your Mac.
Then restart the backup using MyBook Mac's software, or use Time Machine

yeah, time machine is the most idiot-proof way to back your mac up.

yeah, I'll definitely re-format and use it for time machine after I get my stuff off of it. I was just wondering if there was a way to get my stuff off of it without using a PC.

^is it backed up in some proprietary format to WD? If not just connect the MyBook and transfer the files directly to your mac.

yeah, it's all backed up into 11 separate WD files.

then you'll need a PC unless WD has a program for mac that will read those files

shouldn't have backed it up that way.

Yeah, I realize that now...didn't really know how it was backing up. There is a mac application I installed on my machine that came with the my book, however for some odd reason, it doesn't recognize the windows made back up when I choose restore. Real odd.

yeah, it's not a windows image, just a WD file. Would it be easy to partition my mac and put windows on it to transfer all of this stuff?

i've never done the partioning to include windows or the virtual windows experience(vmware fusion, etc)..but does anyone know if I could access the backup from the MyBook and restore it to the Mac?

you can do a BootCamp install since its free (assuming you have a Windows install CD. you need Windows XP SP3 or newer).

Then your computer can dual boot into macOS or Windows. In windows its just like any windows computer so the WD stuff will work fine. You can also access the Windows drive (read only by default) from within MacOS so you can easily copy the stuff from window to MacOS.

the only reason it feels a bit over my head right now is because I've had the mac all of 4 days and the last time I used one was in grade school. ^^ sounds like the best option, I was just wondering if with vmware I could have both up at the same time and do the copy there.

Also, if I use boot camp, can I undo the partition later and get rid of windows so it's like it was never there? Don't really think I'll need it afterwards...

yea you can delete the windows partition pretty easily in bootcamp.

yeh, its really easy to setup. If you have the windows CD already, its dead easy.

Run the "Boot Camp Assistant" (CMD-Space to open spotlight and start typing it in).

Just leave the default 32gig partition or whatever and hit go. It prompts you all along the way. Takes about 30min to install and you're good to go. Probably even easier than getting vmware and setting that up.

To delete the windows partitin, run "Boot Camp Assistant" again and there is an option to remove the windows partition. Everything resizes automatically, doesnt even require a reboot.

thanks for all the input...I partitioned with boot camp and everything worked like a charm. Now that everything is moved over I shall be using that myBook for time machine.
