Did any of y'all see this?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090508/ap_on_re_us/us_school_dance_flap

Quote :
"FINDLAY, Ohio – A student at a fundamentalist Baptist school that forbids dancing, rock music, hand-holding and kissing will be suspended if he takes his girlfriend to her public high school prom, his principal said.

Despite the warning, 17-year-old Tyler Frost, who has never been to a dance before, said he plans to attend Findlay High School's prom Saturday.

Frost, a senior at Heritage Christian School in northwest Ohio, agreed to the school's rules when he signed a statement of cooperation at the beginning of the year, principal Tim England said.

The teen, who is scheduled to receive his diploma May 24, would be suspended from classes and receive an "incomplete" on remaining assignments, England said. Frost also would not be permitted to attend graduation but would get a diploma once he completes final exams. If Frost is involved with alcohol or sex at the prom, he will be expelled, England said.

Frost's stepfather Stephan Johnson said the school's rules should not apply outside the classroom.

"He deserves to wear that cap and gown," Johnson said.

Frost said he thought he had handled the situation properly. Findlay requires students from other schools attending the prom to get a signature from their principal, which Frost did.

"I expected a short lecture about making the right decisions and not doing something stupid," Frost said. "I thought I would get his signature and that would be the end."

England acknowledged signing the form but warned Frost there would be consequences if he attended the dance. England then took the issue to a school committee made up of church members, who decided to threaten Frost with suspension.

"In life, we constantly make decisions whether we are going to please self or please God. (Frost) chose one path, and the school committee chose the other," England said.

The handbook for the 84-student Christian school says rock music "is part of the counterculture which seeks to implant seeds of rebellion in young people's hearts and minds."

England said Frost's family should not be surprised by the school's position.

"For the parents to claim any injustice regarding this issue is at best forgetful and at worst disingenuous," he said. "It is our hope that the student and his parents will abide by the policies they have already agreed to."

The principal at Findlay High School, whose graduates include Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, said he respects, but does not agree with, Heritage Christian School's view of prom.

"I don't see (dancing and rock music) as immoral acts," Craig Kupferberg said."

well its a good lesson for him to learn. he shouldn't have signed it if he didn't want to abide by it. perhaps he could have just gone to public school and been a christian too

Perhaps he wasn't dating her when he signed the "agreement". But I agree with you nevertheless. This kind of shit is RIDICULOUS!!!

So how are they going to know if he is involved with alcohol or sex? Is the principal going to watch through the window, if they go to someones house after prom?

the kid and his parents have no one to blame but themselves. they agreed. maybe they should have asked themselves why they were signing on to follow a belief system they didn't actually agree with.

Sounds like they didn't "agree" to have their son punished for non school related events

That's awesome that this guy has a direct line to God. He could really put his unique gift to some good use if he wanted (like, clarifying God's views on war, abortion, uhh.... rock music) instead of raining on a 17 year old's parade.

1 Samuel 18:6-7
When the men were returning home after David had killed the Philistine, the women came out from all the towns of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs and with tambourines and lutes. 7 As they danced, they sang: "Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.

Psalm 149:3
Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.

Psalm 150
Praise the LORD! Praise God in His sanctuary; Praise Him in His mighty expanse. Praise Him for His mighty deeds; Praise Him according to His excellent greatness. Praise Him with trumpet sound; Praise Him with harp and lyre. Praise Him with timbrel and dancing; Praise Him with stringed instruments andpipe. Praise Him with loud cymbals; Praise Him with resounding cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD!

Ecclesiastes 3:1-4
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance

Jeremiah 3:31-3-5
I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness. I will build you up again and you will be rebuilt, O Virgin Israel. Again you will take up your tambourines and go out to dance with the joyful.

Most fundamentalists are too out of shape to enjoy dancing or having sex. I'm not sure if they made their religion that way because that's how they are, or if they are that way because of their religion. But I do know I wouldn't want to go to any place that's their idea of heaven.

Wait, so... why does he need the school's express permission to do something way after curricular hours?

Could he not just have said nothing to the school officials and gone to the public school prom on his own time, and no one would have known the difference? It's not like someone's going to be patrolling the event looking for AWOL Baptists. ...then again, I wouldn't be that surprised if they did.

Despite the backwards-ass shit from these school officials, it's really this kid's/his parent's fault for:
1) Signing up to follow rules they disagree with
2) Asking for the principal's permission for something he has no reasonable need to know about, instead of just going about their lives
3) Living in Ohio

They are too busy having picnics and complaining about how any clothing you can exercise in is too revealing. Religion and obesity are linked, at least in the Christian fundies.

Correlation != Causation, here...

There's a third factor, which I like to call "fucking stupid".

Fucking Stupid is a contributing factor to obesity (for obvious reasons).
Fucking Stupid also makes people more susceptible to cult-like extremism.

They could be linked through the fucking stupid factor, I'd consider that reasonable. I weighed more as a kid with fat fundie parents than I do now at 26. My parents made fun of me for trying to lose weight and not wanting to be fat. I think it's a combo of passive aggressive behavior (wanting to make everyone in their church fat so they are skinny in comparison), lack of willpower and nutritional sense (mom told me oatmeal cookies were good for me because they had fiber!), and a complete unwillingness to say no to anything including food someone offers them because their religion teaches them to be human doormats and not think for themselves.

there are different kinds of stupid, I think this one is mental laziness, by contrast there are people that don't have much wit but think really hard, but the lazy minded kind of stupid person is like "well, I could think about the world and life in all its complexity, or I could just declare that it is all very simple and this one book has all there is to know and then consider myself right all the time. That sounds a lot better to me"

oh and, ^ Winnar in looking as gay as possible while holding a naked woman

This doesn't come as a surprise to me in the least. This happens all the time people. I have a lot of friends that used to go to Christian schools and this is just the way it is. If you don't want these rules you don't attend these schools. While I don't like all of the rules that most Christian schools enforce I can at least understand why they do it. They have to go overkill on everything in order to protect their Christian reputation because in all honesty, if the kid was allowed to go the the prom and got his gf knocked up there would be an article about the 'christian' boy who banged his chick out.

My grandparents sent their foster kid to a school like this for awhile. My grandmother, who I have never seen wear a skirt, had to buy one to wear just when taking the girl to and from school.

It didn't last very long
