I'm moving soon on account of gettin' hitched.

I've been spoiled with a nice close commute my first two years out. Just benchmarking all of you...is 47 miles (94 miles/day) what you'd call a terribly long commute? Or just long? Or hell, even reasonable?

I'll be driving it (no bus or train).

I guess that depends on traffic, I did about half that a day for a year or so and it was very reasonable even with horrible rush hour traffic

I think it might get a little long but if it's smooth sailing all the way it'd be fairly pleasant, just get satellite radio or audiobooks or something to kill the time though

or just talk on the phone with the SO, I know people who do worse daily

My commute is 68 miles round trip. It's all on the highway so unless some idiot did something dumb it's nice. I am also here in Burlington/Greensboro and I would never ever want to go on I-40 East in Raleigh again.

47 miles each way long term would cause me to try to move or find a new job - if it was going to be for more than 6 months i'd buy a cheap beater car to get me to and from work

My first commute was 92 miles each way. That was my first summer out of high school. So I'd say yours was just 'long'

my dad's commute for years was West chester, PA to Cary, NC every Friday/Sunday

I am 15 miles roundtrip from work. It takes me anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes to get to work each morning, and that's Cary city driving. I love it. I too am spoiled.

i did 60miles one way for the first 5 years out of school. you get used to it, even with traffic. in the evenings i would break it up by going mountain biking or stopping for dinner on the way home.

Now I do 25miles one way through downtown atlanta. its very doable, the evening commute can be a bitch every now and then, but some people down here do 3 times that.

Oh, but I only do it around once a week.

Buckhead to Duluth.

I am going the opposite way of traffic so its pretty much just the distance i have to travel... about 20 min in the morning, 25 in the afternoon.

^^^ nice. I would sacrifice almost everything to be close to work but our office is in the middle of suburban crap and I refuse to live there. So work is haul, but everything else is walking distance from my place, love it.

right now it's about 12 miles, but takes about 30 minutes since I take the bus and train.

I'm about to move further from the city, so it'll go up to about 20 miles, and probably 40 minutes or so.

^^^ depends on what they mean by hot.

its still looks like a warzone with all the construction, they tore down about 75% of it and are in the middle of rebuilding it. Once thats done it will be too damn nice, I wont even be able to shop where I live. Their goal is to make it second only to Beverly Hills in terms of shopping.

It will be nice, but I miss the grungier days already haha

I'm at about 7.5 miles to get to work right now. Next semester I'm starting grad school at State which is going to up me to 27.5 miles to get to there. That amount isn't unreasonable, but if I had stayed with my job I could have easily moved next year to walking distance to work.

As for your situation Wyloch, if I were to end up nearly 50 miles away from a long term job prospect, I'd move closer or find a different job.

1.5 miles each way, so 3 miles total

sometimes i scooter, sometimes i motorcycle, sometimes i bike, sometimes i walk...and if it's raining, i'll usually drive the car

i'd hate to live far from work

This is a one-year situation while she finishes her last year of grad school in Baltimore (Towson). I work in southern Maryland, so we have to split the difference basically. The second she graduates we're booking it back to southern MD.

Sounds like I should suck it up and just deal with it, since I know for certain that it's only for one year.

On average, about 100 miles per day - different jobs around the state. I've gotten used to spending a lot of time on the road and prefer it to the short commute to the central office itself.

Since the end of April when I moved, I now walk 0.6 miles. If I'm really hustling I can make it there in about 8 minutes.

It's liberating.

It's also May, so we'll see what it's like in the winter.

I'm looking to have a 7 mile or less commute to the shipyard when I move in a couple months.

Not interested in sitting in traffic any more. I hate even medium commutes. Just gotta find a decent neighborhood that's this close to the shipyard.

I have a 62 mile commute in the morning and a 62 mile commute in the evening. It's not really that bad, and it's just for the summer. Chapel Hill--> Greensboro via 54 is not a bad drive. At least I get to take something other than I40 for half the trip. I just put in a book on tape and I'm good. This week is Pride and Prejudice.

Its a freaking journey, though back roads and highways, then on an interstate, then back on to back roads and past some factories, though the gates of mordor and up mount doom, then between some sphinxes that shoot lasers at you if you don't believe in yourself, past the church where you meet Aeris, then down capital. it takes about an hour ten.
