I think the issue I'm about to present matters. I hope you will, too.

A while back, I posted the following concerning some fine animation I saw in Chit Chat:

Quote :
"Looks great--but 'belltower' (sic) should be two separate words:

bell tower

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/bell%20tower

Bell tower

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell_tower

Memorial Bell Tower

http://www.ncsu.edu/facilities/buildings/tower.html"

Even though I received "death threats" for the post above, I truly thought I was performing a service: helping to promote correct spelling. Well, something has come to my attention that I will risk death by crackhead to share with you.

According to NC State University's "Reference and Style Section" (yes, there is such a thing), the Memorial Tower may be referred to as the "Belltower." You can imagine my surprise, since this is not the generally accepted spelling of "bell tower."

http://www.ncsu.edu/graphicID/manual98/manual4.pdf

So, I was correct concerning the generally accepted spelling of "bell tower." But it appears that I was wrong concerning the spelling of "Belltower" as it relates to official NC State publications, other documents, products, and signage.

I propose that in addition to finishing the Belltower, which I support, we begin to work toward uniformity in all of our official NC State publications, other documents, products, and signage (just look at the sign on Western near Pullen). After all, the world is watching, and this small yet important issue seems to be confusing the local and national media, too (among others):

N.C. State tower undergoing repairs

Quote :
"RALEIGH, N.C., May 7 (UPI) -- The bell tower at North Carolina State University is undergoing repairs after being struck by lightning during a recent storm, bell tower experts say."

(Yes, I know they operate under different style manuals. But, apparently, the secondary name should, in fact, be spelled "Belltower.")

BREAKING NEWS: Minor semantic issues have been found to be arbitrary and inconsistent. Seething rage spreads across the Raleigh population. Obama dispatches emergency military strike team to NCSU campus to quell rebellion. Secretary of Defense officially quoted as saying, "We will show no mercy."

More at 11. Stay tuned.

Would the 'b' always be capitalized?

^Important question.

If we/they just capitalize the 'B' at all times, it becomes a proper noun and we/they can pretty much spell it however the fuck we/they want.

On a side note, is this a matter of "we" the NCSU population or "they" the NCSU administration?

I would assume other colleges have bell towers. If we want to call ours the "Belltower", I guess thats ok. But if another college calls theirs the "Belltower" as well, that it shouldn't be capitalized. For example, "The UA's and NCSU's belltowers [sic] are cool." .

^^^ According to the manual, no. But "they" are wrong in this: If you go with a lowercase b, then you should spell it "bell tower," as in any bell tower.

^I concur. "belltower" if and only if the 'b' is capitalized.

Seems like they don't really know which way to go on this one...
Quote :
"Belltower
See Memorial Tower."

Quote :
"Memorial Tower
This is the official name; the structure is informally known as the belltower (sometimes
capitalized). The tower, completed in 1937, honors NC State alumni who were
killed during World War I."

Perhaps we could use the precident set by the following to establish consistent policy:
Quote :
"Brickyard
Capitalize the B when referring to the brick courtyard area that is formally known as
University Plaza."

On a somewhat related note, that manual mentions nothing at all about the term "NCST", which ESPN insists upon using as our official school abbreviation.

It's probably more annoying than any other spelling consistency issue that we could mention.

Dunno if I'll ever be able to fathom what the life is like of someone that posts a thread like this at that hour.

even I find this extreme

but I will take the time to note that the fucking thing does not have a bell (and does not need one), so the issue of calling it a "bell tower" or "belltower" is ultimately unimportant

I'd be happier if we all just called it the Memorial Tower

^x5 Goddammit, OmarBadouche, that was private!

^^ He moves anything I post in The Lounge to Shit Shat. He gets off on it--I'm not sure why, though. Entertainment value, maybe? I've never fucked with him or done anything to him, for that matter.

One word vs. two words has nothing to do with spelling.
