I'm trying to buy an inner and outer replacement handle for my microwave, but the cheapest I've found so far is $45 for those two parts. Does anyone know where to find cheaper parts, or is that as low as it goes?
Maker: Maytag Model: CMV1000 ADW Color: white as the snow
I already checked out two microwave stores here in Raleigh, but they didn't have the parts at all. Gracias for any help. 5/12/2009 2:33:46 PM |

Forilla. It's an above-stove microwave, so it'd be a little more, but still, $45 for a plastic handle seems outrageous and egregious. 5/12/2009 2:38:10 PM |

If we actually had a free market, I'm sure someone would sell it to you for $1.

you will not it anywhere cheaper than http://www.appliancepartspros.com
And they are expensive because they have them in stock and they'll ship them the same day, I'm betting. Pretty handy if the handle is completed busted like Willy Nilly's grill.

^ Wouldn't they be cheaper if they're in stock? Weirdly enough, that site doesn't have the outer part of the handle, just the inner. Dagnabbit. 5/12/2009 2:54:39 PM |

Parts places are weird, sometimes they're cheaper because they've been sitting in inventory for 5 years. If they had to order one from the manuf. today, the price could be much higher than what they paid for it years ago. 5/12/2009 3:00:54 PM |

Or, in a free and open market, the few microwave designers that use proprietary (difficult or impossible to fix with standard materials,) parts wouldn't be able to compete with the many other microwave designers that use "open-source" parts (with simple and easy to work with materials and hardware,) and therefore most every microwave door handle could easily be replaced with some other handle. You see.... does your microwave door handle have plastic screws or other commonly available fasteners holding it to the door? No? If it did, you could simply buy a generic handle and fix it yourself -- but our beloved corporate oligarchs already agreed amongst themselves that such an option would discourage you from buying expensive replacement parts that they exclusively sell, as well as discouraging you from simply landfilling the broken product and buying a new one.
Free and open markets + competition = consumer choice

Yeah, it actually does I might just get some generic white handle and make me a unique handle, thanks for the idea.
Everywhere I've called either doesn't have the part, or has it for above $45.5/12/2009 3:10:40 PM |

True story my parents have the same microwave and their handle broke too. I bought it at repairclinic.com
Same parts as ^, but $2 more. https://www.repairclinic.com/SSPartDetail.aspx?PartID=651496&PPStack=1 https://www.repairclinic.com/SSPartDetail.aspx?PartID=651499&PPStack=1 5/12/2009 5:38:25 PM |

Yeah, I already found the parts for $45.
I found a boss handle at Lowes that juuust about fit, but it turns out nothing is the right length. So it's either fork out $45 or make a handle. Dang. 5/12/2009 6:55:47 PM |

buy a handle that's too long or too short. use one of the existing holes and drill a new hole for the other end. fill the other hole with with a small machine screw and a nut.
[Edited on May 12, 2009 at 7:39 PM. Reason : you can even paint the head of the filler screw with some white fingernail paint to camo it]
[Edited on May 12, 2009 at 7:44 PM. Reason : lol you'd have to fill it with something plastic. look through those bolt bins at lowe's] 5/12/2009 7:38:44 PM |

Use a rotary tool and rotozip bit on a $1 2"x2" fence picket and a can of paint. Depending on the existing screw's pitch and type, you may need either get a nut to embed in the wood or not. 5/12/2009 8:16:47 PM |
