For the Luddites amongst us to post our questions to the great conglomerate Oracle that is TT.

I'll go first:
I'm about to wipe the hard drive on my '05 HP Pavilion and am thinking of upgrading my RAM.

Recommendations? I'm not in the market for a new lap-top, since this one accommodates my needs well enough for now.

Thanks!

OS? Current amount of RAM?

I'm assuming XP and 512MB, maybe a gig?

2GB ($20-$40 depending on brand and exact type) and that HDD wipe and you should be as good as new.

If it's from 05 you're probably using DDR, and that shit costs a pretty penny now in comparison to DDR2.

A dual channel set of 2GB can be had for $60-100 - depending on what you get. I'd go for the $100 set because it's generally better quality. Use a memory finder tool though, because you don't want to get something that's incompatible with what you've already got. Building on is ok, replacing in a unit that old is a waste of money. Also don't go over 3GB because your XP is only 32bit and cant address memory above that threshold properly.

Oh shit, didn't realize it's a laptop. Get ready to pay $Texas!

first gen DDR is ridiculously expensive, especially SODIMMs (which your laptop uses).

can you tell us the model number of your laptop?

yep. PC2700.

depends on what your memory config is now, either 1x1GB or 2x512MB. i'm guessing the latter due to the fact it's cheaper for HP.

if the former, you only need one of these.
if the latter, you need two.

IMHO it's not going to be worth getting a 1gig stick of memory unless you know you have only 1 slot in use. My guess is that the laptop has 2x512 sticks. That means you will have to remove one 512 stick and replace it with a 1gig stick. You will end up with 1.5g vs. 1 gig of RAM, which I doubt will make that much difference.

nub question about windows XP backup:

I'll be putting in a new hard drive today and installing windows 7 on said drive. I'll want to backup my data on the XP drive and restore it on the w7 drive. Is the xp backup tool the only thing I'll need? Will I need to backup to dvd or can I simply specify a location on the new drive to restore from?

it's just the way the iphone is. they keep telling everyone to wait for the update, but that's silly.

most likely because you have something set up incorrectly.

what exactly doesn't work about it? i've never had a problem with either my gmail account or my work exchange account.

we dont have an exchange account at work.

and it automatically imported the settings from Outlook and didnt work... I manually entered them, and it worked for a while, then stopped. It wouldnt let me send out stuff so I switched it to using the AT&T outgoing server and it worked occasionally, then stopped.

So guys, where do you recommend me starting for learning HTML? I'm looking for book recommendations mostly, or maybe DVD, but I've got a few weeks of generally down time and I figure it'd be a useful skill.

Thanks!

^^ yeah, that was my first thought. I've liked others of the dummies series, but I didn't know if anyone had a lesser known but better suggestion.

I'll look into that.

I ran across the first edition of this book ~10 years ago when I was first learning HTML. I learned way more from it than I did HTML for dummies. I've owned several books from the Visual Quickstart series since, they teach through a series of progressively complex examples, which is the best way to learn any sort of programming language IMO.

Are the updates different each day? It could be an install that keeps failing, and keeps bugging you.

Alright, I'm thinking about getting a desk top to replace my aging "lap-top" I haven't looked for a desk top in AGES so hit me up with some low cost ($500 range) but relatively quality computers. Reliability is more important than anything exotic.
