Actually the illegal copies of the recovery disc will more or less do the same as whatever they would send to him.

We used them over and over again at the Bookstore because that's how you're supposed to use them. He's more or less just downloading them for free and bypassing their pricey recovery CD's, though he could get in trouble if caught.

it actually shouldn't be much different, if it goes like it does for corporate activations

lenovo has a key in the SLIC table in the bios that tells windows it is authorized to run on that computer, vista activation sees that and everything is okay.

just install retail vista without a key and see what happens.

Funny, I called them about driver installation disks last semester and they sent them free of charge.

Unless you're referring to the OS installation disk itself, in which case, that's probably your own fault for losing.

And he is referring to the OS installation disk. That should have been pretty apparent by the original post.

The last time I ordered recovery CDs from Compaq they cost a whopping $15 shipped. $45 for a couple of discs is a ripoff. I guess they have to FedEx them from China or something.

my mom has a Lenovo Ideapad, but yours might have the same feature...

with the computer off, turn it on using the "Lenovo" button instead of the button. It will then take you through the recovery process without the need for any discs.

This is assuming you did not manually delete the recovery partition when you installed Windows 7.
