it seems to be guys that i know who talk about sports games. they talk about how good their players are on the game and how when in particular a new season of madden football comes out they bitch about how the "madden rating" is not right and such player is better or worse than the rating. i don't get it. dudes have real jobs, wives, and kids. they seem totally normal and then this shit come out of their mouths.

Then they are talking about actual reality... in that they think the developers of Madden gave a certain player worse stats in the game (speed, catching ability, ect) than the real-life player actually has. So they are referring to actual players in the real world. I'm not sure where your confusion is coming from here.

In my warped mind the reasoning doesn't seem to fit. If people though video games were reality wouldn't the argument go something like:

Why didn't the Colts win last night? I ran 10 simulations on my PS3 right before the game and the Colts won every time, BUT THEY SOMEHOW LOST LAST NIGHT!!!

Or maybe even:

You are mad that they enjoy a game, and are interested in the way it is made (i.e. discussing player ratings)? It also seems to annoy you that they would speak about a video game in public.

I saw a show on tv where they were discussing the psychological and cultural impact of this and other games like it. People exchange large quantities of real-world money for stuff in Second Life. They were talking to people who quit their real-world jobs to make money in the game. At first I was thinking that shit is completely crazy, but when you think of how many people go sit in front of a computer and work for 8 hours a day on shit that does not better them as a person in any way, what the fuck is the difference?

If this kid gets paid real world money to go play a computer game every night, why is that worse than taking a shitty part-time job to make that money?

its really simple to explain this phenomenon.

some people are unhappy with their lives, so they create an alternate persona in a video game. This alternate persona can destroy dragons, make loads of money (gold, if you will), have in-game friends, and basically succeed at life. why would they want to revert back to their old life thats mediocre at best, when they can assume this new persona and be completely happy?
