unless the person's credit score is like 400 and they are handling $$ all day i don't see why it should matter.but how much weight does your credit score really have on hiring??

It matters because the type of people who don't pay their bills typically are also not very responsible people/employees in general.

Of course there are exceptions. Some good people get trapped in things that kill their credit, and it's not their fault. But that is an extreme minority of cases, and I think an employer is justified in using it as a factor for employment. I wouldn't automatically rule someone out based on it - but it's a huge red flag.

def a case by case basis type of thing but i can see why it does matter in some cases

i mean, there's a big difference in someone who has missed payments and shit constantly for years vs somehow who had a few months of no job 3 years ago and missed some payments that killed their credit. either one could have a shit credit score but obviously one is looking pretty irresponsible while the other just had a rough patch and got past it..

If you aren't responsible enough to have a 3 month emergency fund then why would I want to hire you?

k maybe they lost a job for 6 months right after their parents died in a horrible accident where they had to cover all the funeral expenses a few months after they got out of college which was before they could build up enough savings to cover everything

shit happens.

^They better hope they never got caught using that logic. Some people will sue for anything and that's grounds for the ACLU to throw a parade.

^^I think that could be a possible answer 1% of the time. They are looking for tax liens, owed child support, bankruptcy, especially. Also, your debt load and your potential debt load.

Yeah, but it gets around the office. I told my Director I didn't want a fat woman to be hired after I interviewed her, she weighed like 300 pounds. The next girl was coming in soon and I was overhead by a fat lady that worked for us when I said "If this girl weighs half as much as the next one and is half as smart, she's hired." The fat lady called HR and they documented me saying it, haha.

I have a buddy who did financial advising for a while. His company deliberately hired people with bad credit, because they knew they were behind on their bills and would work harder to catch up. His boss even encouraged him to buy a house and a new car so that he would have more debt and thus have to work more

i've read of people who were being considered for general manager/cfo/controller positions that were turned down based on their personal financial habits. it makes sense to me, if someone can't handle their own money, i sure as hell don't want them handling my company's money.

Wouldn't want people getting hired so they could pay back their debts.

That is really none of your companies business.

though for professional, financial, and other high profile jobs I could see why they would not want someone with a credit rating in the gutter. You'd think though they would take this by a case by case business especially for someone who's score is on the line

Is this person in the dumps for credit bc they had a major medical expense?
Was this person laid off, just bought a house yet, and took several months to find a new job. (While a 40 yr old should have a sizeable reserve; I could see a 28 yr old 1st time home buyer getting fucked with this)

OR

Did this person rack up $1000's maxing out his credit card at the mall, buying rims, or other irresponsible wasters of money. Chronically paying bills late (income going to drugs instead of the bills).

I doubt they run credit checks for food service jobs.

Glad this was not a requirement for my current job. Right out of college unfortunately i did not have a 3 month emergency fund. Must be nice if your daddy had you 3-month emergency fund as part of his trust fund.

It's in reference to HUR's comment. Apparently he thinks the only way to obtain money is through parents.

I, too, worked my way through college without the help of my parents and had enough money left over to last at least three months.

Besides waiting for the summer between fresh and soph and working an internship between sophomore and junior, I never worked in college; I just took loans out so I wouldn't have to worry about working while I was in school The student loans don't seem to be affecting my credit score hardly at all though.

I know they looked at my credit when I was applying for my security clearance...which of course I needed for my job

reason being, if they see that you're probably in debt, they think that you might take bribes or can be blackmailed for sensitive info.
