Yes, that was gay.

I'd like some input from someone that has done it. Google only tells me of hacks to get it to work. I'd like to see if there's a simple way.

I tried to with 10.4.8 with no success and want to try with Mac OS X v10.5.6 Leopard before I spend $129

Well, you only asked if it's possible.

It seems like it should be simple enough to run the VM from the Mac OS X iso just like any other VM, but it hasn't been that way...

and google only points me to ways to pirate the image and hack it (I'd like to avoid a pirated version)

[Edited on June 3, 2009 at 2:54 PM. Reason : two months ago reports were that release was imminent. so who knows]

You can use a retail DVD, but you will always have to hack it to get install it on non-Apple hardware. It's very grey area whether it's legal or not. But you do not need a pirated image to get it working.

There is no *legal* way to just put in a DVD and install it on PC hardware.
The quasi-legal way is to download the patches, dump your DVD, patch it and reburn it.

even if you go buy a legal copy of leopard, apple explicitly states in the EULA that it forbids installing the OS on non-apple hardware.

with this being said, breaking the EULA isn't illegal (it's not an executable contract).

in response to your original question... yes... that's how the very first builds of OS X running on the modified darwin kernel were released.

not really, have you seen the latest EFI emulation projects? i mean, technically that's a "hack" in and of itself, but you're doing nothing whatsoever to the leopard installer. hell, it even loads the modified kexts before the OS boots.

^it's just doing the hack injection on boot rather than pre-install. It's all still very grey area. I haven't messed with OSX86 in a while, since I own both a Mac and a PC, but up until 10.4.8, I was a pretty avid user for a year or so. Really good community working on it, and I've actually used some offshoot projects on my real Mac

well, idk.

they surprised us with releasing the iPhone OS 3.0 beta on the day they announced it... though i admit, i guess it's pretty unlikely they'll have it in stores then.

yeah if anything was going to be in stores next week, we'd likely have seen reports of large shipments going in to apple stores
