There's a dog who's been affiliated with our family for his whole life, fifteen years, and he died yesterday. We called him bat dog because he was black and had big ears that stood up -- at least, until the past few years, when age caused much of his fur to turn white and a spider bite made one of his ears fall down. He was a mangy mutt, but clever and very protective of my family, even though he technically didn't belong to us.

Pet deaths are the only thing I've seen the wolf web be consistently decent about, so I'm posting it because I'm depressed about the thing and nobody's around at the moment.

^They always have been about pet deaths, that I've seen.

That being said, Bat Dog was marginally less ugly than that (though towards the end he had several large lumps all over his body)

The worst part is that it had to be mercy killed after the mortal injury. I feel doubly sorry for the person who had to carry out that task.

i was a vet tech when our family dog (then 17 years old) needed to be put to sleep...i put her down myself, and then took her home to our farm and buried her myself

don't know why, but it just felt right

Thanks guys.

People have just shown up, so I'm going to go comiserate (read: drink heavily and eulogize the dog) with them for a while.

I will probably revisit this thread in a less clearheaded state of mind.

i'm confused...are y'all having a visitation for (or sit-in in honor of) a dog? i mean, i understand that some people are VERY attached to their pets, but they tend to be old people with no family and a half-dozen cats
