Anyone taken 415 with Tran over the summer? How does it compare to a typical fall/spring section? 6/15/2009 9:28:25 AM |

wtf i looked for this and couldn't find it.
I've heard that Tran is a good instructor to have for 415, but that it's a lot to learn in a summer session

Had it with Tu last year....easy A because he didn't really have much to teach, mainly GD&T and spindle design. No tests/quizzes.
As for Tran, he'll probably work you to death. 6/17/2009 3:37:21 PM |

415?
It's a good deal of work, since (at least during the semester) it is 3 fairly involved projects. Tran was demanding in that he wanted to see a well written, clearly explained, professional quality report. He hardly cares if your theory/solution is sound. I understand that in general no matter who teaches this course, it is about the team experience and report writing, not the lecture or theory or problem solving.
Tu would have been fun. 6/18/2009 12:54:46 AM |

yeah, unfortunately theres no other choice other than tran for summer II and i really need to take this so i can graduate in december.
i tried to get the department to allow me to take 415 with 416 in the fall (which i've seen friends do in previous semesters) but they were being extremely sketchy and rude towards my request (what more can i expect from the MAE department though)... 6/19/2009 9:22:17 AM |

^ I was mostly disappointed that we wouldn't be learning any machine design, so it would be the same with any prof. Except probably Dow. 6/19/2009 9:28:11 PM |

I had 415 w/ Tran about a year ago in the spring of '08. Overall I enjoyed it and would really recommend Tran for any class; he's a great instructor. As others have said, he cares more about the way you are working with your team and your ability to write reports that aren't retarded. As long as your report writing has some basis in reality you'll be fine.
Don't get me wrong, you will work your butt off with getting the reports done (there's 3 total). The material, the actual coursework from the text, for 415 isn't that bad though. If you can read you should pass 415 with no trouble at all. Seriously, that class is not hard just involved. 6/21/2009 7:33:35 AM |
