CharybdisjimAnd allow me to type up my experience from working there for 5 semesters.[Edited on June 16, 2009 at 3:59 PM. Reason : ]In my department before I left they were hiring newbies at $8/hr for about 15 hours a week. 15 hours is your minimum, and it's usually what they schedule for. If you want to work more you can sort it out with somebody there, as they almost always need people working tuesday and thursday afternoons (at least in school supplies/computer connections). The free book program works by you printing out your book list, collecting all your books, getting it processed at a register as a loan made out to you under a special account, and then you going and using said books. Some items can not be used under this loan program (i.e. stuff that you have to write in/tear stuff out of as part of the class). Once the semester is over you bring all your books back and turn them in and your loan amount is reduced back to zero (as long as you didn't destroy anything). The amount you can check out is more or less unlimited, so long as you are actually taking those classes. Now, working there is a different matter. It's retail. Depending on where you're working it might suck a lot or you might have a lot of fun. In our department we played movies all the time, I put on music on one of the demo computers to override the crappy pop bullshit they play over the speakers, and I would spend most of my time restocking stuff, sorting out shelves, reordering computer stuff, shooting the shit with the other employees, or working on computers in the back office. From time to time you will get a shitty customer. From time to time the wolfman may also show up, and his very existence can only be defined as a test from God. Overall I enjoyed the job because it wasn't too demanding, it wasn't a bad way to socialize with folks, it gave me something to do, and because they were 100% flexible on the hours you wanted to work (seriously, it's the best place for a student to work on campus, IMO). The only drawback is your pay will not be that great while you're working there, unless you are a damn hard worker and prove yourself to be useful. I got a few raises while working there, and that's not generally what happens in other departments. Also, be prepared to have people get all pissy with you on the phone because they suck and don't know how to look up a fucking manager's number. That's all I got for now, you got any more specific questions?[Edited on June 16, 2009 at 4:06 PM. Their business has been down with the economy. They should be hiring significantly for back to school. Go to the bookstore website, find the email address for Lisa Crooms, tell her Avery Long told you about the positions there and that you would like to know if they would be interested in having a student employee work 30 hours a week during the semester that fall. She'll probably tell you to fill out an application, but using that as an inside reference might help you. They were sad to see me go and I left with a good reputation. If you're good with computers, mention that to Lisa. Randy Davis is the manager in charge of computer connections & school supplies, so you can ask him about it as well. They generally limit employees to a 15 hour/week committed schedule and then encourage them to work extra where there is a manpower shortage in the schedule. They might not be too receptive to you wanting to work 30 hours a week, but who knows. The only way to find out is to ask.

Hours will be a plenty in August, but you'll have to fight for them after that. Learn the inventory control system and show up to work on time and you'll be in good shape.

Basically every time he goes in there he finds something completely inane and absurd to bitch about. Like how the store doesn't carry video cameras (BUT FILM STUDENTS NEED THEM YOU SHOULD CARRY THEM YOU HAVE TO CARRY THEM YOU'RE WRONG YOU HAVE TO CARRY THEM). His voice just makes it all that much worse.[Edited on June 17, 2009 at 7:33 PM. Reason : There's no good specific stories, unless you find shitty customers interesting.]

I'm sure it goes far beyond comedy which it actually happens]

Eh, I would advise against it. The book loan program does not cover as many books as it used to and the books not covered are some of the more often needed ones, selected somewhat arbitrarily, and often rather expensive.
