2000 Accord 4cyl AT
In the past week or so I've started to hear a whistling sound coming from the engine compartment while under acceleration (It almost sounds like I have a supercharger). When accelerating normally it doesn't really do it, but when you give it some gas, the sound starts at around 2500 rpm and lasts until about 4000, at which point I can't tell if it stops or if its just drowned out by the noise of the engine. I've tried opening the hood and working the throttle with my hand, but the whistle is slight to non-existent when it isn't under load, so I can't really pinpoint where it's coming from. Any ideas?

No. No ideas at all.

Seriously, I'd have to hear it. Which won't happen unless you live out by Brier Creek. I have no free time, and I'm never in Raleigh anymore.

wow i came to the garage to ask the exact same question

i have an 03 civic but mine is more of a hissing (pronounce "tssssssssss" out loud while making a smile and that's pretty close to what it sounds like). i haven't payed attention to the RPMs, but 200rpms sound about right. it lasts for a couple second and goes away when you take your foot off the pedal.

I searched online for this a while ago an didn't find anything, but i'll start looking again.

EDIT: 5min of searching got me this

http://www.hondacarforum.com/honda-technical/65940-civic-ex-now-makes-hissing-noise-certain-point-acceleration-after-having-short.html

i have a CAI in my set up, if that helps troubleshooting. I've read that this is the sound a CAI makes but I don't remember the noise from when i first got the car. i may be wrong though, i'd like to hear what everyone has to say though.

EDIT2: I'm an idiot, the sound is from the CAI.

you can somewhat hear the sound in this video, before the engine overpowers the hissing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTbaArnnpJo&feature=related

ahaha, thanks for the help fellas.

Try running the engine and spraying the intake piping down with something combustible to check for leaks?

Update

Now that I've had someone to listen to it while I rev the engine, we found that it's actually coming from the exhaust, straight out of the tailpipe. There aren't any visible blockages or holes. I had the catalytic converter replaced a few months ago and there was hardly anything left of the catalyst. Could it be that a leftover piece of the catalyst has just now worked its way into a position thats causing the whistle?

The exhaust leak in my 944 when it was still a 2.5L sounded like a blow off valve. It was pretty cool actually. Coolest exhaust leak evar.
