As someone who lost my father recently, I can tell you that it's plenty.

It literally gets to the point that you get sick of people trying to "help". Just saying that your friend is in your thoughts and that you are there for him/her is all it takes.

well, if you're anything like me, you'll flip through the family album with the grieving son and find a funny picture and say "lol who's that fag" to lighten the mood a little and then find out it was the person for whom he was grieving. great icebreaker

It would be nice if you could do something more, but unless you have discovered the secret to eternal life there is nothing more for you to do (unless they ask you to help with something).

A death in the family like that (especially if it's one of your parents) is something I believe most people would just like time and space to deal with, with most of the time shortly thereafter spent with their immediate family.
