so i was thinking of buying these at walmart the other day but i looked on the side and saw that they are only 1.2V rather than the normal 1.5V, whats the reason for this? I checked duracell, energizer, and rayovacs and they were all the same. I'd like to save some money, but at the same time I don't wanna have to change the batteries in my mouse like twice as often because i'm getting jipped on that extra 0.3V of juice, those thigns are like twice the price of normal batteries anyways.

1.) the "life" of the batteries in your device is determined by the amperage, not the voltage (go with something 1000mAh or higher if AAA, 1200mAh or higher if AA)
2.) anything made in the past 10 years (probably more like 15) that uses standardized batteries (AAA, AA, C, D) will work with 1.2v unless otherwise noted
3.) buy the sanyo eneloop or energizer/rayovac/duracell equivalents of the "pre-charged" longer-shelf-life batteries

^^those numbers (1000 mAh, etc.) aren't the current. mAh stands for "milliamp hours", which is the amount of charge stored

/enginerd

[Edited on June 24, 2009 at 1:54 PM. Reason : you were right, just had the terminology wrong. go by those values, though. higher = more energy]

i dont really want to go in depth here, but basically an alkaline battery is 1.5 for about a minute, then drops below 1.2v and fades faster

a nimh battery will stay at 1.2 for hours longer, and will not drop below that until jsut before it dies.
