NC State junior linebacker Nate Irving was injured in a car accident on Saturday
night and is currently in the Wake Med Trauma Center with non-life threatening
injuries.

Irving suffered a broken leg and a collapsed lung and is scheduled to undergo
surgery on the leg on Sunday evening.

“Our thoughts and prayers are certainly with Nate and his family,” said head coach
Tom O’Brien. “All of his teammates and coaches will be there to support him as he
recovers and goes through the process of rehabilitation.”

Irving was an honorable mention All-ACC performer in 2008, despite missing almost a
third of the season with injuries. He tied for third on the team with 84 stops.

pack pride is the source

This is why, no matter how much hype (or even lack of hype) we have for a promising season in any sport, I don't get excited until its actually happening or happened. Just way too much NCSS for us to EVER count our chickens before they hatch.

Well, it took me about 3-4 months before I was walking unassisted after shattering my femur in a car accident. About a year before the limp was completely gone. I'm also not an athlete and slacked on my rehab.

An athlete who actually tries should be able to be fully recovered in considerably less time, maybe 6 months total. That's assuming it's a femur injury, which is worst case scenario. A break in the lower leg wouldn't take nearly as long. So, maybe........

Im sure this will be a medical red-shirt year. I doubt he will even attempt to play if he can redshirt and keep a year of eligibility.

broken leg...collapsed lung...surgery today...OUT FOR SEASON

http://www.wralsportsfan.com/ncsu/story/5457427/

Quote :
"N.C. State's Irving injured in car accident

Raleigh, N.C. — N.C. State linebacker Nate Irving is recovering after breaking his leg in a car accident.

Irving was expected to undergo surgery Sunday night at WakeMed Trauma Center in Raleigh, where he was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

School officials said Irving suffered a broken leg and a collapsed lung in the car accident Saturday night.

“Our thoughts and prayers are certainly with Nate and his family,” head coach Tom O’Brien said in a statement. “All of his teammates and coaches will be there to support him as he recovers and goes through the process of rehabilitation.”

The junior's status for the upcoming season was not immediately known.

Irving was an honorable mention all-Atlantic Coast Conference player last season despite missing nearly one-third of the year with injuries. He had 84 tackles, tying for third on the team.

Irving, 6 feet 1 and 235 pounds, starred in high school at Wallace-Rose Hill and redshirted as a freshman at State. He made a quick impact as a redshirt freshman, starting four games and making 52 tackles.

As a sophomore, he emerged as one of the ACC's most dynamic players, and State's defense suffered without him.

So what is the usual medical rehabilitation time to recuperate from a broken leg AND a collapsed lung? IM guessing a minimum of 6-8 months, although I hope its half of that time. Who is Irving's backup?

i dont think it will be that bad, we still have a good 2 months *about* before the 1st game, i'm really hoping he only misses one game, if that. still sucks though

we have a lot of linebackers. obviously this sucks but for the team, this might not impact them too terribly much. I know he's the best one of them, and a great playmaker, but they'll still be pretty solid.

hopefully for his sake he's fine and gets better soon though.

it's not like he broke a finger man...he's having surgery to repair his broken leg...if it's his femur, that thing usually takes at least 12 weeks to heal

there is no way he's back on the field playing 9 weeks from now.

just trying to be optimistic, i mean nobody wanted this to happen at all, but its better it happened NOW as opposed to in the middle of the season or during our acc schedule right?
