my guess for 10 above NE would be that you get a compass and find where NE is

then look about 1/9th upward from the horizon to straight upward

anyone know whether this is generally right?

Yeah. The pic below shows an approach of 10 deg above WSW and a departure of 31 deg above NE. I've tried to get out and find it a few times but I'm usually a minute or two late or something.
