Quote :
"Ed Freeman

You're a 19-year-old kid. You're critically wounded and dying in the jungle in the Ia Drang Valley , 11-14-1965, LZ X-ray, Vietnam . Your infantry unit is outnumbered 8-1 and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 or 200 yards away, that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the MediVac helicopters to stop coming in.

You're lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns, and you know you're not getting out. Your family is half way around the world, 12,000 miles away and you'll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day.

Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter and you look up to see an unarmed Huey, but it doesn't seem real because no Medi-Vac markings are on it.

Ed Freeman is coming for you. He's not Medi-Vac, so it's not his job, but he's flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire, after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come.

He's coming anyway.

And he drops it in and sits there in the machine gun fire as they load 2 or 3 of you on board.

Then he flies you up and out, through the gunfire to the doctors and nurses.

And he kept coming back, 13 more times, and took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out.

Medal of Honor Recipient Ed Freeman died on Wednesday, June 25th, 2009, at the age of 80, in Boise , ID. May God rest his soul.

"

A TRUE American hero. RIP and thank you.

That sounds like some Forrest Gump shit right there. I mean, Forrest went back like 10 times and got all his buddies out. He even got Lt. Dan out, who didn't want to be gotten. Then he went back and got Bubba, who was dying. Then on his last trip out, Forrest got shot in the buttocks!!!

The heaviest shit I've read are the ones that jump on a grenade to save their friends. Quite a few people have received the medal of honor for that exact reason. It's hard to read about, especially when you read that the grenade didn't kill them instantly and they had to lay there in agony and shit.

Oh, and after seeing what a grenade does to a human body, I can't imagine willingly jumping on one without a moments hesitation.

This is a person worth remembering, and deserves more recognition that he'd probably receive.

I'm getting sick and tired of seeing michael jackson on the front page of news websites every day. so what if he made legendary music and dancing. I'm pretty sure i'd be just as happy now had he never existed. This whole world has become so obsessed with entertainment & celebrity gossip that it forgets whats really important in life.

The world has forgotten what is really important which is why I think we are due for something catastrophic and worldwide to not-so-gently remind us of the basics.

i dont think theyve forgotten

they were just unaware of this dude

he should be recognized, but im willing to bet theres a lot of shit you have no idea about and therefore woud feel it unimportant enough to recognize

no need to villify the human populace

we can't know everything, but thank you for presenting this man's story to us.

I once read a personal account from a guy who did this and survived. He dove onto it with his hip and drove it into the ground. I guess the ground was pretty soft and absorbed the grenade and it's subsequent explosion because he lived and was able to keep his leg, although he had trouble walking for the rest of his life. I think I remember him saying that there wasn't really any thought involved, he just did it.

The thing that I always wonder about is what if the grenade doesn't go off for a few seconds? Do they think for a second, "Fuck! I had time to throw this thing!"

The recession has reminded us a little bit about what is important but I feel if we weren't so OBSESSED with the live's of the rich and famous there would be some room for these kinds of heroes who really deserve all the respect.

I didn't cry for MJ until his daughter spoke but I sure as fuck cried AND got goosebumps when I read that story.

Also, with MJ, because of his charity I am thankful but the rest is just fat. Every channel I clicked through had MJ, fucking one station called it the DEATH INVESTIGATION and were trying to tell us that Paris was FORCED to talk about her father. It made me sick and I just turned the tv off. Can we spend time on other more important shit pls?

That's why I copy/paste these stories....they're important.

If you're going to make a thread you could at least post the actual Medal of Honor Citation:

Quote :
"FREEMAN, ED W.

Rank and organization: Captain, U.S. Army, Company A, 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion,

First Cavalry Division (Airmobile)

Place and date: Ia Drang Valley, Republic of Vietnam, 14 November 1965

Born: 1928

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Captain Ed W. Freeman, United States Army, distinguished himself by numerous acts of conspicuous gallantry and extraordinary intrepidity on 14 November, 1965, while serving with Company A, 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion, First Cavalry Division (Airmobile). As a flight leader and second in command of a 16-helicopter lift unit, he supported a heavily engaged American infantry battalion at landing zone X-ray in the Ia Drang Valley, Republic of Vietnam. The infantry unit was almost out of ammunition, after taking some of the heaviest casualties of the war, fighting off a relentless attack from a highly motivated, heavily armed enemy force. When the infantry commander closed the helicopter landing zone, due to intense direct enemy fire, Captain Freeman risked his own life by flying his unarmed helicopter through a gauntlet of enemy fire, time after time, delivering critically needed ammunition, water and medical supplies to the underseige battalion. His flights had a direct impact on the battle's outcome by providing the engaged units with timely supplies of ammunition critical to their survival without which they would almost surely have experienced a much greater loss of life. After medical evacuation helicopters refused to fly into the area, due to intense enemy fire, Captain Freeman flew 14 separate rescue missions, providing life- saving evacuation of an estimates 30 seriously wounded soldiers, some of whom would not have survived, had he not acted. All flights were made into a small emergency landing zone within 100 to 200 meters of the defensive perimeter where heavily committed units were perilously holding off the attacking elements. Captain Freeman's selfless acts of great valor, extraordinary perseverance and intrepidity were far above and beyond the call of duty or mission and set a superb example of leadership and courage for all of his peers. Captain Freeman's extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army."

Anyway, here is some gratuitous UH-1 video:
