3 injured.
http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/5546712/

They were just hooking it up to a wrecker to flip it back when I drove past around 1. The driver in the back is lucky that he didn't get smushed.

They do go zooming around town like assholes in those things. Even for fire trucks... I saw one rolling like 40 down the middle of the only two open lanes on Hillsborough St through the construction at like 1 pm one day. That's just fucking retarded. Just take Clark or go over to Western.

"Raleigh, N.C. — Three people were injured Friday morning when a fire truck overturned in downtown Raleigh, police said.

Preliminary information indicates that three occupants of the truck were injured, and at least two were taken to a local hospital, Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue said.

The extent of those injuries were unknown, but Sughrue said they were not believed to be life-threatening.

The wreck happened at about 10:50 a.m. at the intersection of Dawson and West South streets. Dawson Street was closed at Lenoir Street for more than an hour following the wreck. West South Street between Dawson and McDowell streets was closed for more than four hours, Sughrue said.

Further information about the wreck was not immediately available."

This is why you get hundreds of hours of training before you even get into one of these things - this isn't your F150. And also why you wear a seatbelt. Still, shit happens and auto accidents are more likely to claim FF lives than actual fire. And most of the time, the fault lies with the idiot civilians that freak out at intersections when they see red lights behind them.

When you see lights, pull to the RIGHT!

I mean, firetrucks aren't cheap...

is it bad karma to talk shit about a firefighter that epic failed in his job driving a fire truck?

i mean, like is it bad to talk about a fighter pilot who, oh, i dunno, boltered on 4 attempts to land his aircraft and had to ditch it in the ocean?

are we to the point again where we can openly criticize those who suck at their job even though they are performing a noble task without the college aged psuedo-trotsky idealists making it impossible to have free speech?

My rough estimate would be a lot. I'm sure they'll keep the truck and just do an overhaul, but shit.

I hope no highrises catch fire while that's in the shop.

They might have one come in from the surrounding area to help out but good call on that.

That one cost $668,283.00 according to
http://www.legeros.com/ralwake/raleigh/apparatus/aerials/aerial-2004-pierce.shtml

Raleigh just purchased a couple new ladders at 825,000 a piece.

Same thing that happens if any other truck gets in a wreck or has mechanical problems, you get on the radio and they send someone else. Its like 2 mouse clicks for dispatch to add the next closest unit.

poor ladder 4

that thing is hard as fuck to drive

look at the tiller box in the pics... it's a damn miracle the tillerman got out alive...

Thats the only hook and ladder I've seen around downtown and it's based out of the Dawson St station. I'm sure it's the same one.

Quote :
"All of the firefighters are assigned to Fire Station No. 1 at 220 S. Dawson St., Styons said.

The truck they were traveling was a tiller truck, or a hook-and-ladder truck. The truck requires two drivers – one in the front to steer the front wheels and a driver in the back to steer the back wheels. Both drivers of the tiller truck involved in the accident have “extensive experience” driving the vehicle, Styons said.

The wreck happened at about 10:50 a.m. at the intersection of Dawson and West South streets. The truck was making a left turn from Dawson Street onto West South Street when the driver and the rear driver had a miscommunication about making the left turn or continuing straight, according to the police report."

Maybe something way out in durham?

Hopefully nothing that tall catches on fire any time soon and the smaller ladder trucks can handle it.

It's the only Tiller RFD has but RFD has other Ladder trucks that can handle high rise fires...then you also have Garner FD with Ladders and every other damn city surrounding Raleigh with Ladders of their own...so no need to worry....and let's not be so quick to blame the FFs...Both drivers had 30+ years of driving experience between them....the cause for the accident is still under investigation...and to the people complaining about RFD and their response speed: I would think you would want them to speed to your location if you were pinned-in a vehicle or trapped in a burning house...

^^^yup.

you don't get to be a tillerman unless everyone is damn sure you know what you're doing.

and yeah, isn't the aerial on ladder 4 just as tall? or somewhat close?

and i know we have some in cary that were bought because of SAS

This ladder isn't any taller than the other, its 100' and Raleigh still has, I think, three 105' and a couple 100' and whatever is in reserve. This one was more maneuverable and could carry more equipment. They will probably do what the did last year when they flipped an engine (a brand new one too) on St. Albans and put a reserve ladder out at station 1.

the firefighters that talked to our camp kids were on a ladder truck that goes 105 ft. they said they have been having to respond to calls yesterday that the hook/ladder normally responded to. they also said each time they go downtown and back, it takes about a 1/4 tank of fuel (from a 60 gallon tank!)

the firetruck felt it was doing a good job, so it rolled over on it's back and waited for someone to rub its belly
