going 5mph or less over the speed limit? And to those who have, who actually got a ticket?I always thought I was pretty safe going 5 over until my cousin just told me she got pulled over for going 59 in a 55. I've driven by cops plenty of times doing 60 in a 55. Just curious how many people actually get pulled for doing this.
7/24/2009 4:04:21 PM
That'll get laughed right out of court.
7/24/2009 4:05:08 PM
I have a friend who is going to be in the RPD police academy soon who got a ticket for 58 in a 55...and paid it.
7/24/2009 4:05:49 PM
I think Cary is the only place that hands out tickets for going above the posted speed limit. It usually comes down to a "warning" by a bored, power-tripping asshole cop everywhere else.
7/24/2009 4:06:05 PM
They sometimes will in Cary -- but only if you don't look like you belong in Cary.
7/24/2009 4:06:25 PM
are you sure she didn't get clocked higher but the cop reduced it? Cops do that all the time but no one ever mentions that.

7/24/2009 4:08:49 PM
I have seen it done on that show Speeders, but have never experienced it myself. I have several police officer buddies who all tell me that if I stick to 9 over then it is highly highly highly unlikely that I will ever get pulled over.
7/24/2009 4:09:13 PM
i have.then the officer 'smelled alcohol' and made me do a breathalyzer.after blowing a 0.0, he said it must have been the alcohol in my cologne that he smelled and told me to go strait home.i wasn't wearing cologne. good ol' cabarrus county sheriff deputies.
7/24/2009 4:11:23 PM
I work with a guy who worked as a highway patrolman for 12 years. Says they were told not to even bother with people going up to 12mph over. This is in Kentucky though.^yea, and i've taken a breathalyzer before because the officer smelled my deoderant. [Edited on July 24, 2009 at 4:12 PM. Reason : ]

I have two friends that work RPD, they follow the unwritten rule "9 you're fine, 10 you're mine"but also said that it can all depend on the cop's mood or other factors. Like, they tend to not cut UNC fans much slack, but might be a little more lenient towards state fans.
7/24/2009 4:14:21 PM
^Can't the cop get prosecuted for gay bashing then?
7/24/2009 4:15:17 PM
*rimshot*
7/24/2009 4:15:48 PM
I suppose if they were 'caught'
7/24/2009 4:15:50 PM
really 10 ? I thought it was closer to 15 for most, if not as high as 19 on the highway
7/24/2009 4:17:19 PM
well, i'm sure highway patrol has their own set of unwritten rules.
7/24/2009 4:18:28 PM
and a lot of it depends on what stretch of the highway it is.
7/24/2009 4:20:50 PM
My deputy peeps have always said 10 over is normal and they never pull for it.
7/24/2009 4:22:06 PM
You'd never get away with 15-19 over in the Lexington area of 85. You might could pass a cop going 19 over if you're on 64 out in the Eastern part of NC, but that'd be pushing it, and not if you looked like you're from out town.
7/24/2009 4:22:59 PM
nah, i'm fairly certain its 9 everywhere. Only times I've gotten pulled were for 12 and 15 over. I go by cops at 5-9 over all the time (although I do tend to keep towards the 5 over when I see a cop)
7/24/2009 4:23:04 PM
that stretch of 85 between greenboro and charlote, I get passed going 90 all the time and have never seen anyone pulled
7/24/2009 4:23:07 PM
^ yep. but try going 70 through Greensboro between the Lee St. and the High Point Rd exit.
7/24/2009 4:24:13 PM
7/24/2009 4:24:25 PM
^^^That's one of worst places in the state for getting tickets. Seriously. I got pulled there for doing 80 in a 65 and there was no traffic.[Edited on July 24, 2009 at 4:25 PM. Reason : ]
7/24/2009 4:24:36 PM
Eh, I've never driven out there. Funny thing is I lived in Virginia (Richmond) and came back to NCSU all the time, so going on 85/95 and never got pulled up there, where the cops are supposed to be hard asses.^That's how my 12 over ticket was. It was just me, no other cars to be seen, in the right hand lane, and a state trooper passed going the other way. Puts his lights on, U turns and gets me. Must've been quota time or something. This was on highway 70 going from Morehead to havelock[Edited on July 24, 2009 at 4:26 PM. Reason : asdf]
7/24/2009 4:25:09 PM
^That sucks. I've not seen a lot of pulling action on 70 between Raleigh and New Bern, but they will pull on the other side of New Bern pretty quickly. Honestly, it's a little ridiculous if there's no one else on the road.
7/24/2009 4:28:45 PM
Of the 6 times I've been pulled over for speeding, all except one were for 13 to 16 over. The one outlier was 9 over, but that was 12 years ago, not on a highway, in Greensboro.[Edited on July 24, 2009 at 4:45 PM. Reason : Plus I got just a warning for that one.]
7/24/2009 4:44:41 PM
ive only been pulled over and written a ticket for going higher than i was really going. asshole cop
7/24/2009 4:46:30 PM
I got pulled in New Bern a couple of years ago past where the 70 mph zone drops down to 55I was probably still doing around 90 in that 55 zone and the state trooper wrote the ticket for 80 in a 70....not all cops are dicks, just most of themCue: YOU WERE THE DICK FOR GOING 90 IN A 55!!!!!!11
7/24/2009 5:32:03 PM
7/24/2009 5:39:28 PM
"NOBODY PASSES ME, I'M KING SHIT DURR HURR HURR"is what was going through his mind
7/24/2009 5:42:45 PM
Well I passed them (5-7 mph over the limit) on US 1 to US 64 and there were two troopers in the car. Maybe it was a newb getting training.

So a friend of a friend of mine who is an abusive alcoholic with anger issues is becoming a cop... Probably the 3rd person I know with true psychological problems that is on his way/or has become a cop.Isn't it awesome? But I also know a few kickass guys who lay their neck out there to do what is right and aren't dicks about it.
7/24/2009 5:47:47 PM
Young bald white cops in NCShaved bald, not going baldThere seems to be a abundance of themand I'm not saying it because I'm blackmy white friends actually pointed it out to meand its a fucking lot of them
7/24/2009 5:53:26 PM
Oh yeah, they all fucking do it.. scary shit
7/24/2009 5:57:52 PM
one rule: don't pass a cop. my little brother got screwed for doing that (he wasn't going much over at all). but it's just stupid. and the cop basically told him as much: "why'd you pass me?"
7/24/2009 6:07:24 PM
Meeee....my first ticket was for going 5 overthe guy was in training or something
7/24/2009 6:41:44 PM
I was once pulled on 246 heading to Greenville for going 5 over the speed limit. This was back in the day before they increased the speed limit to 70. I was given this whole speech about how even though I wasn't going that much over, it was still dangerous...someone was recently killed driving as fast as I was, etc. etc. I was only given a warning. Now, admittedly, I passed the cop. I intentionally passed him too. Everyone else had slowed down for him and I was like "damn, i'm not changing my cruise just because of this cop."Only time I've ever been pulled, actually.
7/24/2009 6:45:43 PM
haha, if you intentionally pass a cop, you're asking for it.If you do b/t 5-9 over, you're generally safe and if you do get caught, you'll just get a warning or it will get thrown out. Anything double digits over though is fair game
7/24/2009 6:54:22 PM
7/24/2009 7:54:22 PM
^me too
7/24/2009 8:02:36 PM
I've gotten 3 tickets.51 in a 35 in Siler City by a city cop66 in a 35 in Pittsboro by a Pittsboro cop (reduced it to 66 in a 45 on the spot; SL changed from 35 to 45 to 55 in 2000')79 in a 55 crossing Haw River on HWY64W by a Motor Carrier Enforcement at 11:45 at night with no one else on the road.I have passed cops on I40 doing 14 over all the time. I have heard 9 over is the rule for in town and 14 over on the interstate, but it depends on the cop/trooper.I got pulled on I85 in North Georgia doing 101 in a 70, but he let me go with a written warning because I was in a line of about 7 cars all going the same speed.I have never been pulled for less than 16 over.[Edited on July 24, 2009 at 8:08 PM. 7/24/2009 8:46:24 PM
i got pulled for 63 in a 55 once
7/24/2009 8:47:49 PM
What do you people say that ends up in you getting out of a ticket? I know it depends on the cop and his mood and the speed, but I've been polite both times. Last time I was all "I don't know what the speed limit was" but kinda thought I should've done the whole "I know its 55 but I was traveling with traffic, going down a hill, it crept up" or something
7/24/2009 8:50:29 PM
I just shut up and deal with it in court.
7/24/2009 8:51:59 PM
7/24/2009 9:00:52 PM
yeah, i've just been worried that i would fuck up in court and have to pay the whole thing plus get the points, so i just pay a lawyer to take care of it all
