Keep seeing that EAS Matt Hasselbeck commercials, but was wondering what are some of best ones for after working out through personal experience...i've got my creatine for pre, keeping a good diet with vitamins and such...but would like something to take after if it would work to positive effect...and help keep the soreness down, haha

thx in advance

It was my understanding that Creatine doesn't do jack for you (basically just inflates you with water weight) and then you lose that mass once you stop using it. What does it do that I'm missing? Guys in high school might've taken it for mass or temp strength gain in weight lifting class, but that's all I know.

I've been taking GNC Amplified Whey Protein combined with GNC Mass XXX (trying to gain mass), but if I wasn't doing mass I would just do the Amplified Whey Protein. I do this both before and after my workouts. I can't remember which, but GNC recommends something specifically for post-workout recovery.

I was recommended this by my roommate who has seen UNC doctors to perscribe work out and nutrition regimen for his national-level athletic competitions. He also suggested NitroTech or Celltech for post workout and non-workout days, but I already have enough protein canisters on the counter According to the doctors, the GNC Pro Performance brands are more than enough for what you need. Other protein brands just have other crap added in there that evidently doesn't make much of a difference, plus its cheaper.

Quote :
"There is scientific evidence that taking creatine supplements can marginally increase athletic performance in high-intensity anaerobic repetitive cycling sprints, but studies in swimmers and runners have been less than promising, most likely because these activities are sustained at a given intensity and thus do not allow for significant intra-exercise synthesis of additional creatine phosphate molecules. Ingesting creatine can increase the level of phosphocreatine in the muscles up to 20%. It must be noted creatine has no significant effect on aerobic endurance, though it will increase power during short sessions of high-intensity aerobic exercise.[6][7]

Since body mass gains of about 1 kg can occur in a week's time, many studies suggest that the gain is simply due to greater water retention inside the muscle cells. [8] Other studies, however, have shown that creatine increases the activity of satellite cells, which make muscle hypertrophy possible. Creatine supplementation appears to increase the number of myonuclei that satellite cells will 'donate' to damaged muscle fibers, which increases the potential for growth of those fibers. This increase in myonuclei probably stems from creatine's ability to increase levels of the myogenic transcription factor MRF4."

wiki creatine supplements

and hova, i dont think creatine needs to a before or after workout supplement, i think it is a supplement more in the purer sense of he word in that it just needs to be in supply in your body. so as long as you take it every day, it doesnt really matter when. I know alot of people take it before or after workouts (including me, after with protein) so that they remember to take it as much as anything.

could be wrong though.

I do creatine mono, on 100% whey, and powdered gatorade (or my own mix of sugars) for POST. I do a PRE of gatorade (or sugars) and whey if I haven't had a meal recently, and the same during, if I'm going to be more than an hour (like if I'm going to swim/row/pull a sled/whateva after).

I take a daily athletic multivitamin. Additionally I have a protein bar everyday with about 40g of protein. I usually have a shake everyday too with about 25g of protein.

Before workouts I do some kind of super-caffinated drink, such as Vapor or an equivalent.

Afterwards, I have a mix of about 8 oz apple juice and a scoop of protein powder (the GNC Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60). I also take 2 Amplified Creatine tablets if it is a strength day (the GNC people told me this stuff was better than regular Creatine, beyond this I have no data).

I didn't see the soreness part.

For that, stretch, foam roll, eat enough, hydrate, and get enough sleep...

damn, thanks for all the info.

I've been on that GNC Amplified Creatine too...I read up alot on creatine before I started taking it, and I was worried about the temp. water mass gain or it just being a placebo, but it's added 35 pounds to my max in 2 weeks (could be a mental thing, i dunno) so I stay on it. between that and a diet its been working well, justs feels like I've hit a wall. I have a decent well rounded diet as far as healthy meals, vitamins and such...but I was figure I was missing maybe a lil somethin to get over the edge

Thx for the advice kids

Just out of curiosity, what's the appeal in getting bigger? Is it just that you want to be able to lift more weight? Or do you just in general want to be larger? I have never understood this.

lots of reasons...

it could even be associated with their work and needing to be stronger for it
could be they want to be healthier and in turn mass/size is increased
could be they simply want to increase their size for their own interest and self confidence.

regardless...theres nothing wrong with it if you do it correctly.

I have also read that it is good to cycle your creatine intake (actually cycling most supplements seems to be a good idea from what I read). Something like a month on and a month off.

As to the "getting big thing". It's a huge self-confidence booster for one. Personally, if I go to the beach and see a bunch of dudes, the fact that well over half of them have disgusting guts hanging over their bathing suits is pretty shameful (I post this in the most non-homosexual way possible.) If people are in good shape (ie not super fat nor skinny as a rail) it conveys that they will take care of their body, so odds are they are pretty locked on in other areas of their life. I know this is certainly not true in all people, or perhaps even most people, but sometimes perception is reality, at least at first.

I used to be one of those people who was pretty chubby, and well on my way to being outright fat. I look at people now who had the kind of body I used to and I ask myself how I could have ever had that little pride in my appearance to let myself go like that. It was pretty shameful, and I never want to go back to where I was again. Getting "big" or putting on lean muscle mass is simply a validation of the 1-2 hours per day I put in to working out.

I also think that people who are more physically fit are much less likely to be "bullied" around in everyday life including the workplace. This may be completely mental and could even be a result of the fact that I personally am more confident in my appearance now, but I have found that I take a lot less shit from people in all aspects of life. I know personally if I walk into someone's office whom I have never met, I will immediately have more respect for someone who appears outwardly to be in decent shape than some fat disgusting slob, irregardless of their position or title.

I know that this is way off topic of the thread but the question was asked so I figured I'd answer.

I have had success with a protein shake after lifting or a long run. I really like the flavor of America Whey and you can mix it with water so you don't load up on the calories. Lean Body protein shakes are good as well, and the come in the same type of package as those EAS drinks.

American Whey is great. I went out to get some more last night and the guy at GNC said they'd temporarily pulled it from the shelves because of a contaminated batch.

Also, HMB is still the shit.

Seriously, chocolate milk is one of the absolute best post-workout options. If you need some protein then throw in some whey, but its pretty much got all you need already.

All the Chocolate Milk research is flawed. They try to compare chocolate milk (carbs/protein) to gatorade or something similar (carbs). hmm, what will win?

It's not that it's flawed, it's still quite an excellent post workout supplement. Especially if you're not looking to gain some serious bulk, or want to drink non-delicious protein shakes.

10 hours isn't nearly 100 and my post didn't meet any sort of rawr rawr rawr worthy classification.

i've taken multi-vitamins and i have taken creatine in the past. muscle milk/whey as well. the vitamins are hard to qualify if they have worked but i can say my body feels no different after not taking them. as for the creatine and whey i bulked up a little but nothing that would justify the cost, especially since most of it is water weight. i didn't post this earlier because its purely anecdotal and i wasn't ready for a flame war.

the main reason i stopped taking them is because i spoke with a friend who is getting their masters in nutrition at UNC explained to me how they were a waste. maybe she has a good head on her shoulders and maybe she doesn't but that was good enough for me.

*i've always heard soy milk is good for you. how is it bad?

V I run 6 miles 3 to 4 times a week. I swim about 4 miles a week. I do free weights for arms and benching and then I do machines for my back, shoulders and chest. I don't try to get overly muscular, just to be defined and have great muscle endurance. The weights comprise about 3 - 4hours of my weekly 10.

At least post what you're trying to do with your work outs, or how you work out, when you go around saying stuff like this.

yeah.. that was my point. i didnt mean to say they did or didn't work.. just that if you're going to make a statement like that at least elaborate.

edit: although you admitted they worked..just weren't worth the cost.

That's true--just went and googled it after you said something.
I think it's mostly okay, it's a healthy alternative if you're lactose intolerant (which I'm not, I just like the taste of soy milk and my roomies don't so that way they don't steal it). Of course, everything in moderation. But I'll keep looking around. I've heard also that we're not meant to have cow's milk blah blah blah the fats in it are bad for us blah blah blah. I guess it depends on where we get our info lol. Eh!
