my linksys router is acting up. whenever I unable connect to it wire/wireless. wirelessly speaking, it displays full strength signal, but my laptop is unable to connect. my sister's desktop is connected by wire to the router and can't access to the internet either, but when I bypassed the router, the internet works. Any suggestion?

reset it totally. what model? usually it's the button on the back you have to hold a while

who is the internet provider?

also what OS on your laptop? go in and delete any settings about that router in wherever the settings are on your laptop and start over, after you've reset the damn thing

I've tried resetting the router but I don't know how long I'm supposed to hold the reset button. The router model is WRT54G2 and I'm using Win XP.

Can you connect to the router itself? And when you are plugged into it does it give you an IP?

ok, it doesn't have an IP when I logged in. I resetted it and reinstall the cd that came with it. It's fixed now. thanks anyway.

^ im assuming the cd is stuff on your computer? shouldnt need that.

Might also wanna check firmware on it, and upgrade it.

I'm going to take over this thread with my question:

I have one of the new Linksys N routers, but have had this problem with my previous Linksys router as well.

My signal seems to come and go sporadically, however when I plug in through the ethernet cord that's connected to the router, everything is fine and it works.

Not a lot of details, but basically the signal goes in and out, randomly I'm able to pick up the signal for a while and then it goes away again.

Do you have your router encased in a fine wire mesh?

Seriously, sounds like interference. Though my understanding was that N should be higher power and less likely to suffer from it.

Try changing the channel on the router and mess around with turning off or moving other wireless devices. Try testing it with your laptop or whatever right next to the router, then move around to different locations....

You have a n-series router. Do you have n-compatible devices? If not you aren't getting any of the advantages of all the nifty n-spec technologies.

Have you tried switching channels?

When I lived in an apartment, at I started getting signal issues from time to time and switching channels resolved it.

I looked at my settings and my channel was on "Auto" so I changed it to a static channel. Haven't had problems yet.
