Get a Harmony. TWC remotes never fully handle the controls you want them too (like any of the generic "universal" remotes).

I thought about buying a universal remote, but have 2 (cheap ones) already and they never work right, don't want to buy a new one, and all i really want is power and volume control.

harmony remotes are unlike most universal remotes. they work with everything, take about 12 seconds to program, ad macros make even the most advanced setup a piece of cake to operate.

i appreciate the help..i really do. but for $100-$300 i could buy a whole new reciever and have a remote. i know it is possible, all i want is power and volume control, i only have one device i want programmed, i lost the paperwork from the TWC installer years ago, and I don't want to sit on the phone with customer support.

does anyone know where I could find codes for the reciever and what the process is to program a device to the remote?

When your balls drop you're going to realize that all the time, frustration and bullshit you have to go through even for simple things like this with TWC remotes and/or the cheap "universal" remotes, that the cost of the Harmony is worth it.

I bought a refurbished Harmony (it was the Xbox360 version of the 550) off Amazon for $30. The standard 550 refurbished can usually be had for about $50-$60. It is enough for me to realize that I will eventually buy the 880 or One.

I have a knockoff LCD from Costco (Spectre), a 10 year old Yamaha receiver, an Xbox360 (we use for DVD's too), and AT&T U-Verse box/DVR all operating completely with this $30 refurb controller. My wife was even blown away how the remote recognizes what "activity" you are in and so it knows exactly what should be turned on/off, adjusted, inputs changed, etc. You don't turn on your TV, turn on your stereo, turn on your DVD player, select the proper video source, adjust the volume... you simply select "Watch DVD" on the remote and unicorns get to work making shit happen. When I'm done and I select "Watch TV" it knows to only turn off the xbox and stereo, to turn on the cable box/DVR, set the proper video input on the TV, and increase the TV volume.

why are ya'll hell bent on buying another remote. i'm sure its great and works flawlessly, but i don't need it. i use my reciver once or twice a month. the rest of the time all i'm doing is watching regular tv. only 30 mins or so a day.

It's easy and you can do it with TWC's directions in five minutes. That said, if you're going to plunk down the coin for a harmony I think you're a fool to skip a model with RF. I should have bought my 890 years ago.

i have my cable box run through my receiver, but i din't need the volume and bass when watching sportscenter or the news. the tv speakers do fine. i use the reciever more for music, but when watching movies or F1 races i want the reciever.
