I just bought a used PS3 off craiglist, and it doesn't automatically play when I insert the disc. It turns on and everything,, but it seems like it doesn't read the disc. I'm new to PS3 so I don't know if I have to do something in order for the game to play. FML

isn't there some kind of menu that shows what disc is inserted? almost sure that there is..

There's a system setting on what to do when you insert a disc

the usual home screen pops up when you turn the console on, but nothing else pops up when I put the disc in.

so if you scroll over to the game menu, and then down to where the disc should be listed, there's nothing there?

It's the section with a controller icon at the top, and you scroll up/down to find the one with the disc icon next to it, then hit X to start the game

I scrolled over the game menu, but don't see any disc. All I have are game data utility, memory card utility, saved data utility, and trophy collection

I'm not sure if it was ever a widespread problem, but my cousin had issues with his PS3 reading discs. Suddenly his disc drive wouldn't read them anymore (similar to what you are describing). I think he had one of the 80 GB 4 USB port units.

I've heard of the "disc read" problems people have had, but I thought you got an error message with those.

there should be an option in the system menu to format the drive so it's like-new.

after doing some research online, i'm hoping that it's just a problem of the lens being dirty. after watching a couple youtube tutorial, I think I will try to disemble the console and clean the lens. I will keep you guys up to date on what happened.

instead of returning it, you would rather take it apart? is the warranty already gone?

some dumbasses sell them not realizing they are still under warranty. I would call sony and see whats up. some 360 people make a lot of money doing that.
