Shouldn't this be illegal? -- Doesn't freedom of religion apply to minors?
I mean, parents are "in charge" of their children, but that doesn't mean they can force them do anything, right?

If kids are old enough they could try to get emancipated but that's about it.

My parents forced me to put up with their religious bullshit until I was 22 because they threatened to not file the FAFSA (and sent it in late most of the time anyway because they wanted me to not be able to financially support myself so I'd have to find a man).

So? They're people first. If they don't want to participate in religion, why should they have to?
Also, "kid" = under 18

That is pretty fucked up.

That is even more fucked up.

Which right exactly? The right to legally "kidnap" their kids and take them anywhere?

This whole mindset is why our society is in such a downward spiral or better yet the reason for the dumbing of America.

Its not just about religion but everything else as well.

my parents made me go to church till i finally realized i was an atheist. they still more or less force me to go to the christmas service, but at this point i don't care.

but i don't see how it could be illegal to force kids to go to church. it's legal to force kids to go to school, right?

my kids are going to have the fear of God in them. I was raised/went to episcopalian school and I think it did wonders for me even though I'm not religious now. gave me a good moral foundation, appreciation, etc.

A child can apply for their... independence. I don't know the true word, but I think they can do it before 18.

^^^Emancipation.

They must also be able to prove that they can support themselves, and IIRC, they must have good reason.

Regarding lewoods' claims: she has an axe to grind against her parents. And, going on her posting history, a "late" fasfa probably means at the end of february. Which isn't late at all, for NCSU. Late, only in the sense that it wasn't done the first possible day. Even though her parents don't have to file the FAFSA for her. Now, getting tax info from them so as to do one's own FAFSA can be a bitch on its own, but at least one has taken a step or two in taking control of the issue.

My childhood is pretty much the perfect example of how religion makes life hell for kids. Either that or my parents filed the fafsa late because they honestly just didn't give a shit, but I'm not sure which is more depressing. I did just tell my mom I was moving in with my boyfriend and if she didn't like it they could pay for my rent, no objections when money has to come out of their pocket to support their religious bullshit.

Soap Box is too slow, too partisan, and too predictable.

Ambrosia, late means they submitted it AFTER THE DEADLINE for financial aid. And they refused to give me their tax info, they'd only submit it themselves. I'd have been perfectly happy to have filled it out myself, but they'd only do it and only whenever they felt like it.

They also didn't help me pay for college and still filed with me as a dependent on their taxes so they'd get more back and I'd get less. I could go on and on, but I won't and I'll just say that I had a truly fucked up childhood that most people couldn't imagine thanks to religion.

They can only do this up until you make $6k in a year. Once you make more than that, you have to file on your own.

I'm not entirely positive on the $6k number, but I know it's somewhere around there.

Though I'm guessing you didn't work that much while you were in school, so it doesn't really matter.

That's only the deadline for priority consideration.

You can file for financial aid at any time.

You could have prevented this (assuming you got your W2s before they got theirs).

So did I.

You can't blame religion for everything. That'll never stop you from trying, though.

Religion is an enabler for the batshit crazies like my mom that makes them 1000x worse. My childhood wouldn't have been perfect without religion, but it would have been a ton better than it was.

Also, I could have qualified for a ton more aid by getting it in before the priority deadline. I had to transfer out of a private school because I couldn't afford it after their first late FAFSA bullshit.

Thumper, I'm not sure if I made more than $6k a year. If I did I'm not above threatening them with an audit to get back what they owe me. Will have to go check, thanks for the idea.

"how do you know?"

NEver would have set foot in Christian school.
Never would have had my mom abandon me and my brother every weekend to prepare for teaching children's church or sunday school
Never would have been dragged to church 3x a week and maybe could have done something more normal like sports instead
Never would have been home schooled with religious textbooks, which is damn near career suicide before you even start if you want to go into biology or a related field.
Wouldn't have had parents that gave their money away to everyone else before deciding they didn't have enough left to help pay for college.

Ambrosia, paying for school would have been easier if I was emancipated (no late fafsa and qualified for more aid), but my parents had my dog and wouldn't let me have her back so that wasn't an option (still wanted to be able to see her, loved her more than my parents and they knew it).

ok lets just think this out for a second. your parents used religion to bring you down...

so what i have here is a diagram of this situation.

think of religion as the gun. the things that stem from that ,like your fafsa problems, as the bullets and your mother the gopher.

currently you are blaming the gun for the bullets that hurt you. but should we not blame the gopher for learning how to misuse the gun?

^^^ I'm just saying it sounds like to me that your parents were freaking crazy and it wasn't religion that caused it.

should your parents had been atheist, i'm SURE there would have have been other outlets that would have screwed you up just the same.

and the only "issues" i see in those statements are really the last two

^^hahaha

i went to christian school for 8 years.

i, too, was "dragged" to church multiple times a week.

my mom was a work-a-holic, so i had nannies my whole life, one of which i called actually called mommy. she didnt like that. aha.

im not trying to make light of your situation, it sounds like you had a really screwed up childhood, but it seems odd to blame it solely on one thing.
