What cities would you want to live in:

1) As a single adult?
2) As a young couple?
3) To raise a family?
4) During retirement?

And why?

For me:
1) Austin or San Diego (great nightlife + outdoor activities)
2) DC or LA (great for career advancement)
3) Raleigh (family is here and would want to see grandkids)
4) Indiantic, FL or Naples, FL (chill, beautiful with beaches and year-round golf and tennis)

Austin is awesome. Going there for Labor Day. Can't wait for line dancing at the Broken Spoke.

And just got back from San Diego a month ago.

Both of those cities are awesome if you're into water sports and endurance sports.

Miami is awesome. I go there 3-5 times per year (it's a 3-hour drive and I go occasionally on biz). Would not want to live there. It's $$$ and the jobs tend to pay in sunshine. And it really helps to be bilingual. That I am not.

But the people are beautiful and nightlife is great. Fun place.

New Zealand (gorgeous country and LOTS of outdoor activities)
New Zealand (see ^)
Raleigh maybe? (good central location for seeing people/family, going to the mountains and/or beach, etc)
Coast of Maine (really relaxing and beautiful spot, at least from spring to fall - winter could be rough)

for all of these i'd like to live in a medium sized town in the north somewhere. but it has to be an honest to goodness town, not a conglomerate of strip malls.

currently the only 5 states i can see myself living in(other than nc) are oregon(portland), washington(seattle or a few others), texas(austin, dallas), va(richmond area or fairfaxish area), and ga(atl suburbs)

parents seem to think baltimore/bethesda/DC area would be good for me. i'm kinda hesitant to subscribe to that school of thought.

1) Chicago
2) Here, or where we're going to for #3:
3) Wyoming or Montana...maybe Colorado. Last choice would be the Brainerd area in MN.
4) Can't say yet. I've moved so much that I would likely be happy with staying at #3.

Chicago: dude, it's chicago
Wyoming/Montana/Colorado: Z and I love it out there. For a couple years at least, we can live out there, and he can stay working at his current company...pulling the same salary, which would go waaaaaaaaaaaaay further out there. Then, he'd teach. I want to raise our kids in a way that it's normal to line dry laundry, make one's own bread and cheese, and be more self-sustaining than is possible in a suburban area. The reason for doing this out west it's fucking gorgeous. And the governments tend to be a little more libertarian in their approaches to issues.

Brainerd area: see reasons for WY/MT/CO, and add family to the list.

Now that I live in Portsmouth, VA I might live here for all four. Well, number three might change. If I manage to find somebody to spend the rest of my life with while I'm working here, we'll probably go to NH/Maine and I'll work at the shipyard up there.

Houston is nasty and somewhat ghet, especially post-Katrina. I lived there a couple of years ago. I'd come home from a jog outside and have a gorgeous tan. Said tan would wash away in the shower. The smog there is horrendous. Worse than LA, I think.

Austin is nothing like the rest of Texas. Not a huge fan of TX, but I  Austin.

And jadn.

4) National/State parks - any with camping sites needs camp hosts; stay at a park for a month or few, then move on to the next one. See the country, live in an RV, and from what I've read/heard, the parks pay camp hosts (not well, but its $ when you're already retired).

Va beach, baby. Long live Mount Trashmore!

Honestly, I'm planning to run a marathon somewhere on the West Coast by the end of the year. Haven't picked my race yet, but am open to suggestions.

1) Boise, ID or Denver, CO
2) Boise
3) I'm torn with this - I'd love to raise my fam in Idaho or Montana but my parents are in the triangle, and I'd want to be close to them. I do love this area, though.
4) Somewhere in Big Sky country

Meh, I've lived so many places already I'd be alright with moving back to Raleigh. Wouldn't mind moving to the Bay Area or Seattle though.

My grandparents did that for three years. They said it was nice at first but it got old after they had seen everywhere plus driving the RV around with arthritis was apparently a bitch

I live in New Bern, very near the water. Ideally, I think I'd like something near Wrightsville or Topsail.
