If you never put your income and expenses in a format that you can look at, you never realize how much you're blowing on interest a year. And if you think about it, for decades I can't think of any sort of campaign that screams "INTEREST IS BAD. BAD FOR YOU!"
No, we've been bombarded by credit card offers about how much power it unlocks for you, about all the stuff you can get, and buy a home as its a good investment. There just hasn't been any sort of force on the other side to let people know that it isn't good for them. 8/3/2009 9:47:34 AM |

I agree fail boat.
Dave does talk common sense, but he doesnt hide that fact either. He talks about giving you advice your grandmother would give you....before americans started acting like spoiled children and wanted everything now even if they didnt have the money.
Its helped me bc I didnt have a "plan" to eliminate my debt or to save for retirement. I was saving a little and paying extra on my debts, but this has just helped focus me and pay attention to where my money was going.
I listen to his show daily, and its amazing how people get into these situations. I mean people making 35k a year with 100k in credit card debt and a 300k house going into foreclosure. And you think for every one calling in taking responsiblity there are probably thousands who did the same thing and simply blame others for them losing it all.8/3/2009 12:03:22 PM |

Short of a mortgage that is going to kick in as soon as my house is done being built, and about $300 on a credit card that gets paid off monthly, I am completely debt free.
I just think this guy is a d-bag. He's not helping anyone.8/3/2009 1:45:57 PM |

I think that Dave Ramsey preaches a lot of oversimplified advice.
The thing is, his oversimplified advice is still orders of magnitude better than what most people do. So, no, I don't agree with a lot of what he says...but for the average dumbass, I guess he's a whole lot better than nothing.
His teetotaler, potentially blinded by his own past, oversimplified approach is at best unnecessary, and often suboptimal/counterproductive. On the other hand, while a little red wine every day is good for you in general, it's probably not the best approach for an alcoholic on the road to recovery, which is why I say that for most people, his methods are, well...not terrible, I guess. 8/3/2009 9:14:27 PM |

Well, I've never been bankrupt...that's one thing I have going for me.
Regardless, his advice is often oversimplified and not optimal. It is probably better than nothing for the stupid masses...it's just that really being financially savvy is not difficult, so his "Not Totally Fucking Away Your Finances for Dummies Complete Retards" approach can be a little silly.

He tells you that in the first chapter of the book that his ways are common sense and there's nothing flashy about it.
I am not going to say that I agree with everything he has to say. But like others have said, the majority of this country are complete idiots when it comes to credit cards. The average american has something like 8 credit cards?? So a little commom sense would go a long way for someone who is thousands of dollars in credit card debt.8/6/2009 7:33:58 AM |

Yeah, his advice is counterproductive to the small minority of us who actually know what we're doing. It's less than optimal, but far better than the catastrophic status-quo for the majority of people who chronically fuck away their financial well-being. 8/6/2009 1:25:05 PM |

The big problem with Dave Ramsey is that if you move to using cash only, have all bills paid off, no credit cards, and your house is paid for, after a few years you end up with NO CREDIT.
He acknowledges this and says "oh there are ways around it, go here here and here and these people will loan you money" 8/7/2009 8:07:37 AM |

If you're at the point where you have your home paid off you'll have no problem getting credit. If anything you could get a HELOC at a rate lower than a big bank will give you on a standard credit card. 8/7/2009 9:02:06 AM |

You do realize that a lot of these morons you mention boone are making an effort to be more responsible. Some people just need a plan. I didnt have any credit card debt, have always paid off my balance every month and really do not live beyond my means. However, I came out of school with a ton of student loan debt, and when we bought our home we only put 10% down and took out two mortgages. At the end of this year Ill be debt free except my first mortgage.
So you can laugh at me, call me names, etc. But the big part of doing this is not really caring what people think about you, your lifestyle, or what you drive...esp from broke/dependent people. 8/8/2009 11:14:04 PM |

"But Dave, I needed that new boat!" 8/8/2009 11:17:37 PM |
eyedrb All American 5853 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah, it is sad to hear the mess people get themselves into. But they are at least reaching out for help and a plan to correct thier mistakes. It is far easier to play the victim role and say the bank shouldnt have lent you the money for the boat, etc. Imagine for every "moron" that calls in how many thousands dont or even think they are getting themselves in trouble. Habitual, "Well I can afford the payments"....type people.
Dave doesnt do anything special, he just offers advice and helps people put aside thier emotions/stress and look at thier mess rationally and give them a plan. Feeling empowered about taking control of thier financial lives instead of feeling helpless and running from collectors. Personally I cant imagine what kind of stress that shit would be, or to be facing foreclosure or bankruptcy.
Although I had a guy I went to optometry school with filed bankruptcy. He asked me for a ride to the attorneys office one day and told me all about it. He charged his tuition from undergrad, living, etc.. and was going to file. He acted pretty upset over it. However, I found out he went to mexico for spring break after that meeting and then had a brand new leased truck after the bankruptcy went through. Totally irresponsible and I really dont think much of people that behave like that. Everyone makes mistakes, but acting like children isnt a behavior worthy of respect or sympathy. imo 8/8/2009 11:27:42 PM |

I'm so glad Dave Ramsey helped you learn not to give a shit what other people think. A lot of us mastered that in high school, but you probably just thought we were weird. It's a good thing that you stipulated "esp broke/dependent people" because let's be real...you do care what some people think about you...AHAHAHAHA
And I'm not laughing at you for not having a plan to eliminate debt and save for retirement (although it is interesting hear Mr. McGottaPlan, advocate for personal responsibility and punishment, admit he ain't shit). I'm really just laughing because you are so fucking earnest about your appreciation for this Ramsey guy. I mean, you're usually a cynical dude, dude.
