Rep. Price, who covers most of Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary, and Apex, decided he doesn't want to end up on YouTube with a video full of his constituents trashing him for not representing their views. He's decided to hold a town hall over the phone where only approved questions get asked and he can pull the plug on anyone who gets rowdy.

It's time this career shithead was voted out of office. You idiots should have voted for Lawson last year. But we'll get another chance in 2010.

Say no to bailouts, endless wars, the continuation of Bush's policies, and a corrupt government.

Say yes to the United States Constitution.

Just out of curiosity, how do you suppose any of the current health care proposals are unconstitutional?

Lawson being anti-federal grants to the research triangle, anti-abortion, anti-gay marriage, & his opposition to federal funding for education just don't sit well with me. I've met him & talked to him, and he seemed like a nice guy, but he will never be elected to represent an area comprised mostly of Orange & Durham county even if that area does include a part of Cary. He'd have much better luck moving a little west & going after Etheridge's seat, or going north & after Miller's seat while trying for his first time at holding public office.

I'm not condoning or condemning it, but I have sympathy for representatives apprehension towards scheduling town hall discussions when they know there will be no discussion allowed. As you can tell from my post history I haven't defended any of the health care reform ideas, but this whole yelling down democratic debate is getting on my nerves.

After much consideration with family and friends, I have decided not to run against David Price again in 2010.

I remain grateful to the support of over 4,500 donors across the country, giving on average just over $100 and helping us wage a surprisingly vigorous campaign against our twenty-two year incumbent. I remain grateful to over 200 grassroots volunteers who helped us staff every polling place from early voting until election day, and our out-of-state volunteers who called thousands of voters.

Our campaign would have been nothing without you, and thanks to your contributions we were noted for running a strong campaign in a district where gerrymandering gives Republicans a base of 26%.

I'm a big fan of return on investment, however, and while I was curious and passionate enough to run once, 37% is a long way from winning. Ultimately, I can't justify spending my time and your money in North Carolina's 4th District* at this time.

In liberty,
BJ

I noticed that asterisk where he mentioned the 4th district & wondered if he was considering another district to try to get his foot in the door. So I looked it up, and this is actually the follow up on that:

Quote :
"* There is another Republican candidate who has declared his intent to contest Price in NC-04. While he was kind enough to seek my endorsement, we fundamentally disagree on the value of the Federal Reserve and its communist, debt-based money. Plank 5 of the Communist Manifesto details how we have been turned us into Wall Street’s debt slaves, and until we correctly diagnose our underlying economic illness, the mad scientists in Washington and on Wall Street are simply making things worse. His defense of this unsustainable system is understandable, as he is a currency trader previously employed by Societe Generale — the French bank that profited handsomely from your (and my) bailing out AIG. Caveat emptor."

I haven't even heard the name of who is running against Price, but it sounds like Lawson doesn't like him too much.

When you vote for unpopular taxes such as 'Cap n Trade'...you're going to have to face some angry voters.

David Price has been in congress since 1986! 23 years! Come on, it's time for him to retire already.

Price is a democrat errand-boy...with little political will of his own. He does just as he is told by his congressional masters.

I take it that it also got on your nerves when liberals shouted down Tom Tancredo during that campus speech?
And your nerves took another hit when when union goons pushed around those senior citizens at that recent town hall meeting?

Yes. And I said as much in the thread about it. I think protests are fine, & I wouldn't mind seeing all this organized anger in the form of people with signs & chants outside of these town hall meetings combined with serious debate & discussion from those who oppose health care reform going on inside the town hall meeting, but I think completely shutting down democratic discourse is a bad idea.

You can't get upset over the fact that he doesn't want to deal with people who are obviously going to cause trouble. It's a simple fact of people who have nothing to lose trying to exercise their rights. David Price is an excellent congressman that has helped the Triangle become a business mecca and kept it as one of the best places to live year over year. I'll vote for this guy even if he joins the communist party!

Why would he want to deal with the fucking stupid savages at those meetings? I hate Obama's healthcare plan but I see NO reason why any of these Dems should have to face these morons who are just looking to get on youtube or TV and yell loud. There are ways to get your point across to your elected officials and shaking your fist, comparing everyone and their mother to Hitler and screaming about everything is not it.

That's ridiculous. Price has a PhD from Yale and was a political science professor at Duke, and is one of the most policy-oriented members in the House. He isn't one of the endless number of fourth-tier-university-business administration-degree foot soldier shills that constitute the Republican house minority.

It'd be nice to get this guy out of office. Unfortunately, due to the way the districts are drawn up, I don't see it happening anytime soon.

To be fair, despite not having a town hall where a few people will yell & no one else can talk, my understanding is that you can still easily sign up to meet with Congressman Price during the recess while he is here. So if your point is to share concerns about health care reform or to support health care reform, you can express your thoughts, but if your point is to yell so that no one else gets a turn to talk then you'll feel rather silly yelling without an audience to yell over.

Only 47% of Republicans in the South think that the President is a US Citizen. If they can't even concede in something so easily verifiable as that, why should I trust them to know anything about something so large and complex as healthcare reform?

The town hall meetings are turning into angryprotests.

Why would someone knowingly hold a protest against a bill they support?

You shoulda engaged and got me to talk shit about the protesters before you posted that.

As it stands, you don't have a point with that post.

All I've done is point out that Price would be foolish to hold a town hall meeting when he knows it will devolve into angry shouting. i haven't said anything about whether or not the angry shouters have a right to angrily shout. You can shout angrily all you want, but there's no guarantees you'll get a desirable venue to do it in.

Isn't the complaint that people are showing up at these things and basically disrupting it by grabbing the mic and screaming and etc? Doesn't that infringe on the rights of the people who went to ask legitimate questions and listen to their elected leaders?

Granted I haven't seen any instances of this (except for that video from the birthers thing), but I wouldn't have been looking for them.

Exactly and that's why I have a problem with this latest tactic in public discourse. There's nothing wrong with wanting to express dissent, but the way some people are going about it is shameful. I really can't blame politicians on either side from wanting to avoid this nonsense. At least Price is still offering his constituents a venue to talk, even if it isn't town hall style. A lot of politicians aren't even doing that much.

If Price doesn't wanna host an angry protest, then he's not gonna have a town hall meeting.

This is pretty simple shit. People got too uppity and too obnoxious, and now they've lost their venue. These town halls were never guaranteed to them. Maybe they should have thought about that before they fucked up what was possibly their best opportunity to be heard.

What are you talking about? I never said it hadn't happened before.

People exercised their right to scream and shout. He exercised his right not to hold a town hall meeting.

And it's sad because this is an issue worth discussing, but we can't because people are too riled up.

Don't even co-opt The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence for making one of your ridiculous arguments.

It's clear to anyone not grasping at straws that the rowdiness in that movie ws portrayed in a indisputably negative way.

Hell, there's plenty of union violence in US History. So that makes anything unions do acceptable, too, right?

Um. . .some of you don't know what the fuck you're talking about--some in Congress are simply canceling the meetings in advance. How can you fuck up before the meeting is even held?

And there's this:

Quote :
"I think this whole thing [the health-care fiasco] is turning into a domestic political disaster for the [Obama] administration. . . ."

Quote :
"I also think the president has managed through this drama to do one thing that I never imagined would be done at this point and that is unite the Republican Party. You've got economic Republicans; libertarians; the social right--social conservatives--all together in opposition to this big formless blob of a thing called the 'health care that's coming that you're not going to like.' So, that's been extraordinary to me."

^ Why "of course," dare I ask?

Rep. G.K. Butterfield (D-NC) is holding a town hall--he's to be commended. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) held some, too--and he withstood the protestors. Good for him.

http://tinyurl.com/mt9njn

Those who are canceling are just chickenshit, and they don't want the bad PR of looking bad on the six o'clock news--and then all around the Internet. They should just have very tight security and hold the town hall meetings.

I think as long as they are scheduling meetings with any interested town residents, then they are in the clear. If I wanted to talk to my representative and was shouted down, I wouldn't feel like my voice was being heard, and if my representative were preventing the shouting down by having individual or small group meetings to give me a chance to be heard fully, then all the better.
