This should be a pretty entertaining preseason if you’re a Panthers fan. Except for DT (and TE, and arguably QB) our starters are all great, but our depth could be a big problem. I’m bored at work, so I just started typing out things I’m watching for:

DT- Other than Lewis, who the hell is going to play DT for us this year?

OL Depth- Do we have any?

Nickelback- We’ve got one great starter in Gamble and another good one in Marshall, but the nickel position is still a mystery. I’ve been hearing 7th rounder Captain Mudderlyn (sp?) is playing lights-out. We shall see.

RB Mike Goodson- I’ve heard this guy is electric with the ball in his hands – like a bigger version of Smitty. It’ll be interesting to see how we use him (3rd down back, kick returner, slot WR?)

QB Josh McCown- Never really got a chance to see him in action since he was picked up after pre-season last year. I vaguely remember being impressed by his running and throwing will he was in AZ though.

WR Kenny Moore- I loved this guy at Wake Forest and always thought he’d make a good pro if given the chance. Well, here’s his chance. He supposedly worked out with Smitty all offseason, so that’s got to help.

DC Ron Meeks- I was one of the biggest Trgovac haters, so I loved the idea of bringing in Meeks -- our defense has been underachieving since Del Rio left IMO. I have a good feeling that the scheme isn’t going to be drastically different than previous seasons (this is still Fox’s team, after all). But changing coaches usually brings a shot of life to underachieving units.

That was the main reason I was going to watch this game. Preseason sucks even for teams I like, it's better to watch for the NCSU players who haven't quite made it yet.

Charles Johnson is going to get some snaps at DT; he played some DE and some DT last year

but honestly everything I am hearing is that the other starting DT in week 1 of the regular season isn't on the team yet...ie we're going to see what good DTs get dropped from teams with lots of quality DT depth (ie the Titans), and pick up one of those guys

as far as TE, supposedly Gary Barnidge (or as Brentston Buckner likes to say, "Gary Bundrich") has been playing great and is probably gonna be our 1st string TE...I don't know how good of a run blocker he is, I guess not bad, but he is like 6'8" and is good at catching the ball as well...I'm looking forward to seeing him play tonight

Thomas Davis isn't playing, but yeah ... the defense looks pretty awful so far. We really need to bring in a legit DT or teams are going to smash us all year.

I kinda questioned Meeks as a hire because he was with the Colts and their rush D is statistically one of the NFL's worst. The Panthers don't score a bunch and don't score quickly so allowing teams to dominate possession could be a problem for us. No Thomas Davis is part of the problem, it will probably take a little time for the team to pick up the system, no Maake in the middle is going to be the biggest issue this season.
