yeah, that's what I thought of when the video started. He should expand that idea and do a longer TED presentation and see how far he could take the audience participation, like with multiple people dancing on stage or see how far the audience's predictive power would go 8/25/2009 2:48:11 PM |

was the audience filled with only people who know music? it sounded too good to be a room of just anybody, especially when he jumped to places he hadn't given them a note for 8/25/2009 3:50:23 PM |

The point is that the pentatonic scale is ingrained in humans (we can argue it's only ingrained in westerners, and only westerners from certain regions, but that's a separate argument) and they naturally know what note is next based on hearing it over time and the natural mathematical spacing of the notes. 8/25/2009 3:55:47 PM |

^^ i think that's the point...the pentatonic scale is fairly universal and most people "know" it even if they don't "know" music

If you record a big enough church singing a hymn where everyone is mostly keeping the same time (or the words are clear and concise) then it'll sound decent.
Any large enough group in a decent sounding room will sound, well, decent.
Also, as a guess, in a situation like that the ones more likely to be vocalizing are the ones who like doing it, and they're naturally going to sound better.8/25/2009 4:42:29 PM |
