"A local photographer captured hundreds of sharks swimming off our coast Wednesday morning off Carteret County.

Scott Taylor of Beaufort was on a shoot when the helicopter he was riding in passed between Shackleford Banks and Fort Macon off the Crystal Coast.

The photos show hundreds of sharks swimming in the group. Taylor said the helicopter pilot remarked he sees them all the time.

Taylor said when the helicopter dipped down for a closer look, the sharks seemed to be about four to six feet long.

There are 26 species of sharks considered to be the most common sharks of North Carolina, according to the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores website.

Researchers says the sharpnose shark, often referred to as a sand shark, is one of the most common sharks in our waters this time of year.

Bull sharks, blacktip, blacknose, sand tiger, spinner and hammerhead sharks are some of the species that swim off our coast in the summer months.

While the photos are frightening for some, it's important to remember that your chance of encountering a shark is slim. One estimate says your lifetime chance of death from a shark attack is one in 3.7 million."

Haha, what kid of dumb ass statistic is that given the article. I'm pretty sure that would go up significantly if you went out in the water around the site where 100s of sharks are...

Um, z, it's a good idea not to go in the water at all this weekend with Bill passing by. What beach? I am going to but it's in SC.

Quote :
"Don't mess with these waves!
The Weather Channel's Dr. Steve Lyons has put out his wave forecast for the East Coast and Bermuda.

Waves will begin to increase in height beginning Thursday and peak in height on Saturday and Sunday.

As you can see, these waves are nothing to fool around with. Wave heights could reach 24 feet for coastal New England on Sunday.

Did you noticed the forecast for Bermuda? 30 to 40 foot waves are possible along the Bermuda coastline. Incredible."

Quote :
"Don't be stupid, stay out of the water
Don't be stupid; stay out of the ocean this week. That should be the main message regarding the East Coast impacts from Hurricane Bill.

Unfortunately, it's likely that a few ignorant souls will venture into the waters of the East Coast beaches and drown. Maybe a small craft will be brazen and test the angry surf; only to be toppled about and sink.

"Safety lies completely on whether residents/visitors from Florida to Maine stay out of the water."

Those are the possible stories we'll see in the headlines come Sunday or Monday. Let's hope they don't come to be.

It remains a little early to write-off high winds from Bill in the U.S. (especially over coastal New England), but TWC and weather.com expects Bill to be primarily a coastal wave event for the U.S.

Large, powerful waves will likely greet the shores of the East Coast this Saturday and Sunday. Expect waves to begin to rise on the U.S. East Coast Friday night; peaking in height from central Florida to North Carolina on Saturday and peaking along the beaches of the Mid-Atlantic and New England very late Saturday and Sunday.

It is likely that many beaches will experience waves of greater than 10 feet. Rip currents will be a major threat as large waves aid in the formation of rip currents.

Safety lies completely on whether residents/visitors from Florida to Maine stay out of the water. We're talking swimming, boating or fishing.

Video: What are rip currents?

Stay out of the ocean for the next 4-5 days beginning Thursday and continuing through Sunday.

In order to be safe, just stay out of the water. Simple as that. It's tempting but don't do it. You're testing your fate.

Also those fishing on rocks, walls adjacent to the ocean, and jetties should remain away from areas where an occasional high wave can wash them into the ocean.

Do we sound a bit condescending? Well, if that's what it takes to keep you and your family safe then so be it. Your safety is priority number one!"

Yeah, okay. Good luck. Storms are good at churning up bad sea creatures too. Mmmmm jellyfish.

Anyway, fuckin' sharks. We went to a shark informational at a museum on the beach and they said between two piers there were about 150 sharks but only like 3 or 4 were big fuckers to watch out for. Now I know they were lying!

As opposed to what?

Down here in Florida where I live- where there are high levels of fecal coliform?

Or New Jersey?

Seriously, the waters off NC are cleaner than most. It looks nasty because its turbid.

gaurentee that if you have gone into the water of NC anywhere along any beach head there were at least 5-10 sharks within a 2 mile radius, and how many of you have been bitten...none, quit being pussies and dont worry about it, riptides and hurricnanes on the other hand.....trust me dont fuck with rip currents

Yeah, this weekend is going to be nuts. This is the surf report for Wrightsville Beach on Saturday:

Quote :
"Surf: Overhead high ESE long period swell for the morning with occasional double overhead sets. This builds to double to triple overhead high for the afternoon.
Conditions: Semi choppy with SSW winds 5-10kt in the morning shifting S for the afternoon."

Going to get my shredd on son!

ha ha good point. reminds me of a friend who was hiking in Colorado and worried about lightning strikes. People tried to console him that the chance are one in whatever billion. But let's be honest that changes if you're hiking above the trees in an area that thunderstorms almost every day.

Shark week was only a few weeks ago and last really bad shark attack epidemic was in 2001. When I checked around the beginning of August, the last shark attack in NC was July 20-something and I think it was at beufort... I am not sure tho.. I can't remember.

Ha ha never go to the beach after watching shark week. I went to the Outer Banks last week and was almost afraid to go into the water :-( But I did see alot of dolphin and sharks hate dolphins :-)

ha. My ass stays out of the ocean for that very reason. You can say "oh well the chances are slim" but if you play with fire, you're gonna get burned. Plus I've caught way too many 6ft+ sharks right where the waves are breaking.

and I kinda want to ride out on the north end of carolina beach tomorrow night or saturday to watch the waves but that shit floods almost every time there's a storm and I don't wanna get stuck on an island.

That is also true. Those fuckers are out in force this year, well at least down at Oak Island.

And it's always funny when the tourons are like "zomg, look at all the jelly fish" when it's only jellyballs which are completely harmless. They make good spadefish bait and some have little crabs in them that sheepshead love

The worst that will happen from a shark more than likely is a sandshark scratching your leg as it's trying to swim away from you. I've caught plenty of those before. But stingrays, those fuckers will hurt you.

Im guessing those odds are negated the very instand you get in the water with a supernaturally enormous SWARM OF FUCKING SHARKS

This thread is crap.

Sharks in the Beaufort Inlet? Just another day out there, sure they're congregating pretty thick but if they're all in the inlet then there are fewer up and down the beach shores.

The weather channel says don't get in the water? Typical CYA. There will be tons of surfers out there.

my grandfather once caught an eighteen foot hammerhead at the one mile buoy off lookout. the shark pulled the 19 foot thunderbird trihull eight miles out to sea before they got close enough to see what they had on the line

Some show on Discovery did some "tests" to see what the shark preferred. They tested color, type of blood, and type of meat.

The most interesting thing was color. They ignored the black dummy, became interested in the red one, and went after the bright yellow one.

In the blood they had one bag of tuna and one of human. The shark circled around the tuna but attacked the human blood!

In the meat one the shark bit the turkey but spit it out, didn't touch the ham at all, and TOOK the big ass rack of ribs with him!

Soooooooooo, just stay the fuck outta the water! haha

Oh and that statistic is just some silly shit people say to themselves to make em feel better. Kinda like when you walk down a dark alley you say to yourself "There's a small chance some coked out guy is gonna be in the shadows waiting to attack me" when you know damn well you shouldn't be in that alley at night. Stick it to the streets and sand bitches.

Well I think they can smell blood farther but they can also smell pee too.

Oh they also did a heartbeat test since they can sense electro-shit. haha They went after the rapid heartbeat over the slow paced one!

I had planned to go to Wrightsville Beach Saturday and Sunday this weekend...

They are saying stay out of the water....but will it really be that dangerous? I love the big waves, etc.

I bet it will be great on Sunday. I think Saturday will be so big the lifeguards will probably red flag the beach. It'll be exciting nonetheless. Expect to see some serious rip tides and a ton of people getting pulled out of the surf.

This is where I've been getting my info:
http://www.swellinfo.com/surf-forecast/wrightsville-beach-north-carolina.html

I don't know if I'll go in the water much on Saturday...Just gotta see how it looks. I'm pumped about Sunday though.

There will probably be some storms this weekend though. Check the weather report before leaving if you're not too psyched about being on the beach when it's gloomy.

If you get attacked by a shark you are just one unlucky SOB. I'll be surfing this weekend and the LAST thing I will be thinking about is sharks. I am waaay more worried about breaking a leash and then having to swim in through all the breakers.
