So i was looking up health care statistics when i came across the "Murder rate (intentional homicide) world ranking"

Sudan has the worlds 2nd lowest murder rate? didnt they just have a genocide?

It's possible that they're classifying genocide-related killings as non-murder.

Or, more specifically, that a homicide is only deemed to have happened following a government prosecution of the individual and a guilty verdict.

You can bet that pretty much never happens in Sudan.

that was my first thought but im sure whomever did the rank thought of that
there has to be a more sophisticated way of going about this
otherwise places like afghanistan would be right up there

The statistic is from 2000-2004; Sudan was officially in a period of civil war until 2005. They probably categorize casualties of war as being different from intentional homicide, and the low figure is most likely a result of the difficulty of assessing the difference between a garden-variety murder and a politically motivated or war-related attack.

i would like to think the makers of this list were sophisticated enough to account for these things
i'll agree though that genocides may be left out but still hard to believe sudan is in the top 20
