Okay so this was inspired by the weird drink thread.

Have you ever drank something you frequently use as a mixer, such as coke, and even though it's just the soda, you still taste alcohol in it? I hate that. I refuse to use certain drinks as mixers because I'm afraid I will ruin them.

No, I don't think it's someone spiking my drink... it usually happens when the drink gets a little flat or watered down.

That's another thing. I don't drink that often. Like I've drank maybe twice in the past month. If that, and that counts one night where I had A beer.

But sometimes it just comes back to haunt me I guess...

Yes. It's just psychological--especially soon after.

I had an awful encounter with pineapple soda and soju; it took me MONTHS to be able to drink pineapple juice or even eat anything with pineapple without feeling nauseous.

I had a night back in my freshmen year where I drank screwdrivers all night, and the next morning I poured a big glass of OJ to help with the hangover - bad idea

Then something in my psyche is severely opposed to hard liquor, because I still get this sensation regularly, and I have drank liquor maybe 3 times this year.

from 2000 - 2005 (freshman year to 2005) I didn't like mountain dew. I mixed mountain dew with some everclear and got fucked up....way too sick. I just couldn't stomach mountain dew after that...

yea i had to train myself to like diet mtn dew. i'm not a fan of dark sodas as much (except for cherry coke and i don't like diet any kind of dark colored soda). and i don't like diet sprite. diet sierra mist is ok but none of those have caffeine.

so diet mtn dew it is!

Quote :
"Taste aversion is fairly common in humans. When humans eat bad food (e.g., spoiled meat) and get sick, they may find that food aversive until extinction occurs, if ever. Also, as in nature, a food does not have to cause the sickness for it to become aversive. A human who eats sushi for the first time and who happens to come down with an unrelated stomach virus or influenza may still develop a taste aversion to sushi. Even something as obvious as riding a rollercoaster (causing nausea) after eating the sushi will influence the development of taste aversion to sushi. Humans might also develop aversions to certain types of alcohol because of vomiting during intoxication."

I could see of the last sentence could be applied to the mixer used with the alcohol, but I'm no psychologist.

i read about a study that concluded that you can trick people into believing that they had a bad experience with a particular food in the past (got sick after eating it) and they will develop a very strong aversion or reaction to it

i think they studied this topic because it was already known that people often develop aversions to food/drink that they have an actual bad experience with

orange juice definitely reminds me of screwdrivers, though i still like orange juice and haven't had a bad experience with one; similarly, i had a chicken burrito from the c-store one evening before drinking heavily and getting massively ill--i can't even look at those burritos without shuddering 3 years later

[Edited on August 21, 2009 at 4:43 PM. Reason : "diet mt dew = diet cola?"---i'm pretty sure mt dew/diet mtn dew are non-colas]

I get the whole taste aversion thing, but it's kinda different than what I'm talking about. It's not that I can't drink coke (or some various other mixers) anymore, it's that occasionally it will taste like it has rum in it. Even though I know there is no alcohol in it at all.

i know you aren't saying you have an aversion--just like i said i have no problem with orange juice or screwdrivers but orange juice has the same effect on me that you're saying mixers sometimes have on you

it's prolly just sensory confusion caused by association--somewhat similar to sensory aversion by association

I got rediculously sick after a fifth of Goldschlagger when I was in High School. To this day I can't chew cinammon gum without almost puking.

Absolutely this happens to me. In high school I used to mix vodka with fruit punch gatorade ALL the time. I would take it into sporting events and everything and get drunk as hell everytime. Since I have graduated high school (8 years ago) I have yet to be able to drink fruit punch gatorade because it tastes like vodka to me. I tried to drink it last year thinking it had been long enough but I could only get one or two sips down.
