there's a HUGE ASS SPIDER outside my window right now spinning a web the size of my entire window

it's hard to make out what kind it is but it's body is shaped kinda like a black widow like this. but it looks more brown and looks like it has white spots on it's underside.

It's obviously going to set your house on fire and when you try to escape through your window, you'll get caught in its web...

the only 2 poisonous spiders in NC are black widows & brown recluses (why they gotta be dark?)

black widows apparently can have an hour glass shape that ranges from red-yellow-to white! so look out.

black widows are called black widows because they eat their mates

that's all

^I do believe that statement is false.

Quote :
"In Florida, however, there are three other venomous widow spiders (Southern black widow, northern black widow, and, the red widow) in addition to the brown widow. The most commonly encountered species of the group that people are finding around their homes and work place in Sarasota County is the brown widow spider, Latrodectus geometricus. In the mid to late nineties there seems to have been an outbreak of brown widow spiders. Since this article was first written in 2000, this spider has spread throughout Florida and people have reported sightings of it from Southern California, Colorado, Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina.

http://sarasota.extension.ufl.edu/IPM/BrownWidow.htm "

I do believe, that there is a brown widow spider in Apex, NC. More specifically, in my wood pile.

If I'm mistaken on the ID, please let me know. I'd love to be corrected.

Probably a banana spider. The get pretty big, and will put webs up in areas that get lots of sun.

Widows don't like the light, and are generally rather small.

I see black widows all the time while doing my daily farm work. they are usually in dark, damp places. I have never seen one act aggressively, though. As a matter of fact, I don't know of anyone who has been bitten by one even though most people can tell a story about somebody being bitten while sitting in an outhouse years ago.

^^^ That's not a banana spider. That's a black & yellow argiope.

A banana spider is a brazilian wandering spider, which is an extremely venomous and aggressive South American spider (sometimes inadvertently imported to the US in banana shipments).

The completely harmless golden silk spider (an orb-weaver) is sometimes mistakenly called a banana spider based on the shape of it's abdomen, but that's not what it is.

The picture at the top of the thread is a red widow. The spider from Apex looks like it could very well be a brown widow. Widow spiders vary widely in their appearance. Easiest way to identify something for sure is to kill it (bug spray) and take the carcass to the arboretum.

turns out that there are actually two camel spiders in that pic (duh...) and a camel spider isn't actually a spider. its something else called a solpugids.

Quote :
"The camel spider, also called a wind scorpion, is an arachnid, but not a spider at all. It cannot weave a web and possesses no venom. Camel spiders are shade-seekers, called solpugids, which occupy desert regions worldwide.

Camel spiders grow to a length of about 5" (12.7cm) with legs outstretched, and are somewhat less daunting than their reputation.

The folklore began in 1991 with U.S. soldiers during the Gulf War, and was picked up again in 2003 when the U.S. returned to Iraq. Soldiers reported the spiders would scurry across the sand directly at them as if attacking. In truth camel spiders run after shade and are seeking the shade created by the soldiers. Misinformation about camel spiders ran rampant with rumors of their ability to run 25 mph (40 km/hr), jump several feet into the air, lay eggs in a camel's stomach, and even inject sleeping soldiers with anesthetic venom to surreptitiously suck chunks of flesh.

Folklore over the camel spider is not confined to the Middle East. In Mexico the name for the camel spider, matevenados, translates to "deer killers."

Camel spiders can reach speeds of 10 mph (16 km/h), they do jump to modest heights, and are aggressive, though they are not the superspiders of myth. Camel spiders feed on invertebrates, insects and even small reptiles. They have enormous crushing jaws that must work quickly because they have no venom to subdue their prey. Finally, camel spiders are so-named, not because they feed on camels, but because they are found in the same desert-like climates as the camel.

It's no wonder the camel spider is the source of many exaggerated tales with its impressive speed, generous size, and enormous jutting jaws. The awesome camel spider brings to mind the stuff of movies like Starship Troopers, which pits mankind against worlds where giant arachnids rule. But at least for now, the camel spider remains a mere shade-seeker, scuttling through the sands for another meal that will likely have at least 4 legs, if not 6 or 8. And that's good news for us."

ok folks, i'm still alive

this guy is a sneaky bastard. i'm still trying to get a good visual so i can take a photo but he's hiding between the frame of the window and the siding right now. i think he's pissed cause i squirted him with water a couple days ago so he decided to set this lovely trap for me last night by webbing my window shut.

i come bearing pics. he only comes out when it's dark out, probably cause the lights at my desk attract a lot of moths to my window, but he just sits there and stares at me while i work... plotting god knows what.

this is the best i can do with the glare and such low light. not a good angle to see how it's booty is shaped but it's shaped just like a black widow. big ol ass.
