If you're in the vicinity of the Cameron Village Harris Teeter at midday, there is a VIC special where you can get a half sub plus chips plus drink for $3.99. Their half subs are much bigger than, say, a subway 6" also.

FTW...These subs are massive. You can get a 12" sub for only $4 on Fridays too.

Fast food isn't the way to go then. You need to cook though if you want super cheap. You can eat healthy and tasty food for under $3/day. (Read: Not ramen every meal). What is your budget per day for food?

^^
I'll spread it out over five days to compute average costs:

Breakfast: Cereal ($2), Milk ($2), Toast ($1) = $5. Or Breakfast Bars ($3) and Orange Juice ($2).
Lunch: $1 Microwaveable, or, leftovers from dinner (free) = $0-$5.
Dinner: $0.29/lb chicken leg quarters, $0.33 mac and cheese, $0.50 can of vegetables, $0.50 can of biscuits = 3 meals, avg. ~$0.60/meal
$0.99 box of spaghetti, $1.99/lb ground beef, $1.00 tomato sauce = 4 meals, ~$1.00/meal
(List goes on)

Trust me when I say I was poor freshman year. Had a meal plan, but that didn't cover everything.

it should...i had the 8 meals/week plan and managed to do just fine...i'd have one huge meal whenever i had a few hours between classes...i'd take my laptop, do homework, and gorge myself

i'd throw some fruit or whatever in my bag on my way out and fill up my nalgene

i lost 15lbs freshman year and never went hungry

really, if you're just talking about calories, you can go to mickey d's, get two $1 sandwiches (maybe a chicken sandwich and a bacon cheeseburger, for variety, hah) and a $1 large drink

that's what, $3.21? $3.24? any of the dollar menu items will keep you alive...taco bell probably has the most calories for your money, though, if you nab some of those $0.79 bean burritos

For 5 days, how much milk do you put in a bowl of cereal? 1/5 of a gallon?? That's over 3 cups of milk.
2 bucks seems close for a half gallon, which even then may be more than you would use for cereal in 5 days.

Perlith has given you the answer, but it's not the easy answer so enjoy your thickburgers.

<3 Melvin's, I used to go there and Golden Dragon all the time for lunch back in 06/07 when I was in senior design. They have a pretty good burger/fries/drink combo for like $4 I think. Although it isn't as good a deal as Hardees, it is pretty convenient since it is on Hillsborough st. This is of course assuming it is still there, I haven't visited NCSU's campus since Winter 2007 . I'll be back this weekend though .

This is true also, I used to get pork lo mein for lunch for like $3.50. I could only ever finish it all if I was super hungry, so I usually just took the rest back to the lab with me and eat it later.

Since the change of ownership/management a couple of years ago, the "side" portions are a smaller container and are a little more expensive. Still a decent amount of food though.

I lived on the steam special for a couple of years (steamed veggies, white rice - cheapest full meal on the menu and probably the healthiest) until I saw someone pull out the side-dish trick. From then on out it was "just a plate of rice and lo mein please" (half portion of each) for insanely cheap. Probably a little less healthful than the veggie dish, but what do i care?

(unlike wraith^^, though, I tried to not contaminate my leftovers with carbon fiber dust by keeping it out of the lab. i refused to eat in that room. of course, you asshats also got a fancy computer lab. we had 2 computers per team stuck inside the damn construction lab. you young whippersnappers have no idea how good you have it...)

Does I <3 NY still have the lunch special? I think it was like $4 when I was starting school but by the time I left it had gone up like $.50 or $.75, curious what it's up to now.

On Mondays at Melvin's from 2-5pm you can get burgers for a buck each, I think the special lasts until like Halloween...

Find a friend who has a sam's club membership, and go buy the the 60 pack of ramen for like 5 bucks, sooooo much food...

Yeah I didn't eat in the construction lab, I usually took it to the computer lab. I figured out it would be pretty unhealthy to eat in the construction lab after I sneezed one day and my snot was black with carbon fiber dust.

The prices perlith posted are more than what I pay. They are all decent prices that are very easy to find if you buy stuff on sale/store brand. chicken quarters or drumsticks go on sale for 30 cents a lb all the time, you just have to buy 5 lbs and freeze them.

^7...the special is now $4.99 after tax (up from 3.50 when i was in high school...but still a good deal for pizza and a drink). and still awesome...i don't care what any hater says.
