I don't like it because it just gives the theaters another excuse to charge more for tickets. A ticket for a movie should not be $15

I almost made this thread on sunday after I was forced to go to see G-Force. All of the previews were for movies that were in 3D. I guess it's ok for kids movies, but I hope that it doesn't catch on for normal adult movies. Or if it does, I hope theaters will show both versions for people that don't really feel like being all gimmicky.

I saw Creature from the Black Lagoon a few times many years ago at the outdoor theater at the NC Museum of Art. It was pretty awesome.

Hate the glasses. I spend the entire two hours fucking around with them because nothing is in focus.

heard something about an NFL game in 3D i think? the worst part has to be the glasses, maybe somebody should just manufacture regular glasses with 3D lenses, for pretty cheap, so everybody can own a pair? If it's going to be a permanent thing then I guess it'd be worth it to get some. I don't really care though, it doesn't really make or break anything, unless the TV show is just trying way too hard to force things to fly at you..

I didn't particularly mind the glasses. After a while I forgot I had them on. Which really, if that's the best thing you can say about them, then what's the point?

I, too, am annoyed as hell that they use that as an excuse to charge more money. As if selling $.30 of popcorn for $10 isn't bad enough. I took my 8 year old niece to the movies for a matinee screening and after the tickets, glasses rental, and drinks and popcorn I ended up spending $35. It's fucking ridiculous.

/old man rant.

There's a difference in a new trend and new technology. There's no doubt that there have been more movies (and waaay more high profile ones) as of late that have been in 3D.

I don't like it because my eyes have difficulty focusing/relaxing enough to pick up the 3D

I read very recently that the surge of 3-D releases in recent years has been part of a campaign by the major studios to put pressure on more theaters to invest in digital projectors. I want to link to the story, but I can't seem to find it for the life of me. I want to say it was on Mark Evanier's blog, but it might have been Roger Ebert's.

Update: Looks like it was by Jerry Beck, but I found the link on Evanier's blog. Here's the link to the story: http://www.cartoonbrew.com/ideas-commentary/3-d-is-a-fad.html

[Edited on August 26, 2009 at 8:48 AM. Reason : Jerry Beck, not Jeff Beck.]

I think it works great in theaters.

I could not care less about having it in the home.

I don't have some sad hatred for it though.

Well, they already figured out HD, 3D is the next thing to sell us.

I was in the Samsung demo center in Korea a couple of months ago and they showed us a 3D tv that didn't need glasses. It's only 3D for maybe 60 degrees in front of the tv so I walked past it then looked over and some kid on it was throwing shit at me.

Honestly, Im still not a fan of 3d. Its reasonably enjoyable at IMAX, but at a regular theater, I really have not been impressed.

I hate 3D movies!

But I also haven't watched a 3D movie in a really long time. The ones that are out now I just watch at a theater that doesn't do 3D things. I just think it's annoying and unnecessary.

i hate the fad. I thought Avatar used 3D in a decent way. And I like how some of the newer technology makes it looks as if you're looking into/past the screen instead of just things coming out of it.

I HATE that all of these companies are going back and retro-fitting stuff in 3D. I'm alright with it if it's planned out and used to add to the scenery/story telling somehow. But not if it's just because it's what's "hot" or as a means to generate more profit.

I wear glasses as well. And wearing the 3D glasses over my regular glasses is sort of awkward. You'd think they'd acknowledge that and make them come out a little further in the front to fit over glasses. Or at least have some like that available.

I'm really not digging the glasses. I like sunglasses because they look baller and after you wear them for a while you get used to it. I hated when I used to wear glasses as a kid, and I've never gotten used to cardboard 3d glasses.

If 3D tv's cause the cost of normal tv's to drop, then I'm all for it. I don't see myself buying a 3D tv (not going to say ever, could happen down the line), but for now I'm happy with gigantic 2D tv's.

I absolutely hate 3D. HATE.

It mainly pisses me off because I can't focus with my left eye, therefore all 3D is out. Then it's a pain in the ass to try to find showings of the 2D version. Ugh.

i hate it. the colors are missing, plus i wear glasses already. i have a hard enough time with those b/c most of the time a movie screen is right in the range where i kinda need glasses but kinda don't. wearing glasses over glasses isn't comfortable.

really the color thing is what bothers me most.

i am interested in the head tracking thing for gaming though. that looks neat.

I suppose I'm stating the obvious, but they have to do something to get people to go to the theater now that a lot of people have a larger HDTV and surround sound. That and people have video games taking up more percentage of people's entertainment budget. Either that or blame it on downloads. I guess they feel 3-D is what will draw people to theaters. But then I see this:

Quote :
"A ticket for a movie should not be $15"

I stopped going to the theater after the LOTRs movies were done. Is that how much it is now? I'm assuming that's either an exaggeration or movies are over $10 per ticket with a fee for 3-D glasses rental? That's crazy. If they want to entice people back to the theater with a new fad charging extra for it probably isn't the best plan.

They still make their millions though. I wonder just how much the business has gone down over the years.

3D movies are around that. Most AMC theaters in the South have 5 dollar movies through the week

^^ ehh, i'm not sure i'm going along with much of what you said. Do you know for sure that attendance has gone down? And if so, that it's not simply due to the recession?

Plenty of people still go to see movies from my own observations. I go fairly often. And I've actually been to a bunch of sold out shows in the past year. I go to the theater because I want to see some films when they first come out. Or because some films are better seen in a theater on a big screen. I have two 52" TVs in my living room - it's not even close to the same as a theater imo.

Ticket costs in Raleigh are like $6 during the day I think, and around $8-9 at night. 3D movies are around $12 I think - which is still a little less than IMAX. And blueridge is 1.50. Movies typically go there right after or fairly close to when they're out of the big theaters. Not as nice, but about the same cost as redbox and you get a big screen.

I like the 3D. I do wear glasses, but they both seem to fit on my face without trouble. Also, luckily my glasses completely fix vision in both my eyes, so the effect is awesome for CG movies. I like where 3D is right now, where only some movies are 3D and I get to choose which to see.

But it is true that those against 3D should object to its rise, as it really is reducing their options. Such is liberty, it floods the world with winners and losers, though it sure is worth the ride.
